Default My unusual absence

Some of you (hopefully at least one of you) have probably noticed that I've been missing in action for the past month or so. While I'd like to say that I've been enjoying myself away from my PC on holiday for the last month, the reality is less glamorous. But I think I'll start from the beginning and work my way towards the big reason for why I've been gone.

In ancient times...

I've had a PC for a long time. In fact, since 1996 I've almost always had a PC in my room. My first PC was never really that brilliant, but it got me started.

Ichi

i486/DX2 @ 66Mhz
4MB RAM (later upgraded to 8MB, then 16MB)
Integrated graphics
Sound Blaster 16A
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (later alternated with Windows 95)

Frankly, it was crap. It was Packard Bell, so it was overpriced, came with loads of useless shit, and was difficult to upgrade to any meaningful extent. My only excuse was that I was 10 at the time. It lasted me until 1998 though, when...

The Middle Age

Ni

Pentium III @ 450Mhz
128MB RAM
nVidia Riva TNT (later upgraded to nVidia GeForce2 MX)
Sound Blaster Live
Windows 98

This was still pre-built (by Tiny) but was better value and pretty fucking powerful for 1998. I also first got on the internet with this PC, and discovered emulation. It held up well until 2002, when it was time to get another new PC.

A New Start

San

AMD Athlon XP 2100+
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 8500LE (later changed to nVidia GeForce4 MX)
Sound Blaster Audigy Player
Windows XP (dual-booting at first with Windows 98, then XP alone, then dual-booting with Kubuntu, then just with Kubuntu)

San had her ups and her downs, but marked a lot of firsts. First whitebox (built by a local shop), first with broadband, first to see BitTorrent, first with a DVD rewriter, and first to use Linux. Remarkably, she held up very well up to January of this year, when she was felled by an accident during redecorating.

*Crash*
Dad: "Bastard!" (Genuine quote)

That was the end of San. I'll be seeing if either hard drive is in a workable state tomorrow.

Can you give me a job?

So I needed a new PC. My problem was that I'd intended to use San until we'd finished moving (which is why we were redecorating) at which point I'd get Shizuku (my new naming scheme being Studio Ghibli heroines) and leave San to my parents, San eventually being replaced by Chihiro somewhere down the line.

Of course we didn't really have the money for the kind of top-spec PC Shizuku was going to be, so the schedule for Chihiro was brought forward by a year or two, making her a stopgap PC for now.

Chihiro

AMD Sempron 2800+
???MB RAM (I'll figure it out later)
Integrated graphics
Integrated sound
Kubuntu Linux

Chihiro has some problems from the start (like the refresh rate being stuck at a migraine inducing 60Hz and the sound not working at all) but I plan to hammer them out over time.

During my time without a PC, I have been bored enough to unlock practically everything in Soul Calibur III (I even completed Chronicles of the Sword twice, and cleared the battlefield on Chronicle 20), got all but four star coins in New Super Mario Bros, made serious progress on Yoshi's Island DS, and watched seven Studio Ghibli films (I knew they'd come in handy).

In closing, I'm glad to be back and anyone who thought I'd left for good obviously doesn't know how much I like being here.

Welcome back!

I recently had a computer meltdown my ownself.

Is all thermal grease nonconductive? The answer, I'm now aware, is no.

Welcome Back Lilly. Good luck with your Chihiro...I rather like your naming schemes, by the way.
