is there any real differences between roms that have the .md extention and other ones like .bin?

Yes, there is a difference. Not sure about .md but .SMD is interleaved, meaning the data is stored differently than .BIN which isn't interleaved.

I presume that most emulators have code to determine which a ROM is and read it accordingly, so if the emulator you're trying to use doesn't know how to do that, it would explain why they won't run. I use a program called GROM to convert my Genesis ROMs to .bin format. I presume it's hosted here and it's definitely available over at RHDN. It's command line based, but it works fine in XP, not sure about Vista/7.

Yep, you can find it here. That's where I got my copy of it many moons ago.

hmm..tried GROM but it failed to recognize the file as well. apparently it only uses SMD and .bin roms. even tried changing the filetype to smd but it still didnt work. not sure why all these were in that format. hmmm...and they work fine in Fusion 3.61 on my computer. cant find any info on that file type

Hmm...As far as I know, straight BIN and interleaved SMD files are the only ones, but if GROM is choking on them there might be something to it. So what happens? Does it just not recognize there is a file there?

MD is the Multi Game Doctor copier format (as opposed to the Super Mega Drive copier format.) .BIN, of course, is a raw binary format.

You should be able to convert between all three formats using SMD BIN WIN, at least according to the description on RHDN which isn't always accurate.

thanks for pointing me in the direction of that! just tried it out on a few roms however and now they wont even load up in Fusion after converting them to .bin. also tried them in PicodriveDS and jEnesisDS and neither worked. even went as far as trying to convert the converted .bin file to SMD and that failed as well. oh well. thanks for your help. im gonna keep looking into this for now.

edit:also looks like the developers website is down. but found this documentation on all the Genesis file formats. http://www.emulatronia.com/doctec/co...enesis_rom.txt

I'd recommend just downloading a new set of Genesis ROMs. There are plenty of torrents to choose from.
