Default Primary IDE controller failure?

Lately I've been having computer trouble, more specifically with my hard drive. It's been acting up, and it's making a sound like it's turning itself off then right back on again. I checked the s.m.a.r.t thingy and it said no issues to report. I went online to Seagate's website (my HDD is a Barracuda 160gb) and used their quickcheck tool and it also said there are no issues to report. I powered down, then switched my HDD to the secondary IDE channel, so now it's the master drive, and my dvd burner is slave drive. So far, on reboot, I haven't heard that sound or had any problems. Usually before it would act up even before XP finished booting. Could that be primary IDE failure? Oh, and one other thing. The drive indicator light for the primary IDE channel has never worked, but it does for the secondary channel.
