Default I have a GMail account!

Not that special anymore, seeing as you can buy invites off of eBay for 99 cents --- but still, it's a very nice service.

I even got to snag my first.last@gmail.com. Yesh!

Default Am I missing something?

I mean this is a free e-mail service, right? (or at least it will be once it's no longer a beta)

So what's the big hype? Free e-mail services are everywhere.

Here are its high points:

+ 1 GB of compressed storage (never delete any messages, EVAR)
+ Search your messages using Google's search engine.
+ Messages are grouped and stored into "conversations", so browsing your messages looks a lot like threaded mode on this board.
+ Backed by Google's insane PC power. Lightning fast access to your account, just like Google.
+ Spam Filtering capabilities.
+ No junk mail sent by the provider. Text ads display on the right side of the screen, like at Google.
+ Super clean, low bandwidth interface.

And, as for the point of buying one now, GMail will be undoubtedly a very popular service (judging from Google), and it's unknown when it'll go public. So, by getting a GMail account now:

1. You get to reserve your email address.
2. You get the honor and prestige of being able to use something before the general populace. (Like being in the World of Warcraft beta or something)

I have most of that already with yahoo+Thunderbird (except for the 'conversation' thing).

Don't get me wrong... I mean I'm sure this e-mail service will be good... But it just seems like there's all this insane hype over it.... and all it is is just another free e-mail provider

I think a lot of people see it as part of a holy quest to make the internet efficient and user-friendly. Before Google came out, most search engines were giant cluttered messes of popup windows and banners. Everyone thought the key to making money was cramming as much loud advertising down your gullet as possible by filling your screen with bullshit.

And then Google violated every rule in the book: they put together this clean, eminently usable, lightning-fast site with nothing more than unobtrusive text links... and, they made boatloads of money. Now, everyone's scrambling to duplicate them, but there was and is something extraordinarily admirable in the way they conduct service-oriented business.

So, GMail is the next step in that revolution. No spam, as much space as you could ever want, the cleanest interface you could desire, and an isolated system from MS Outlook to keep all those exploits out. With Hotmail's free account recently down to 2MB, handing out Gigabytes of storage in that package seems positively saintly.

I assume all three of your invites are gone?

I'd use two of the three invites on the other forumers who are interested if I got one.
Could escalate into a nice frenzy of GMails for the whole board, you know, if the three invites are still in effect (does take a few days before you're able to invite though, methinks).

Too bad Hotmail and Yahoo! are blocking GMail invites.....at least the Yahoo! ones are going to the Bulk folder. Invites to Hotmail are getting dumped completely....they don't fail on delivery, they don't get bounced, they just disappear like a fart in the wind.
