Default Japanese Language Support in Mozilla Firefox

There's some very FireFox people on this board, so I thought I'd ask here...

How can I get FireFox to display japanese characters? I've tried each japanese encoding option in the View-->Character Encoding options menu (including the ones I had to add manually) and nothing is working. For a test I tried http://www.nintendo.co.jp Nintendo's Japanese Website</a>. Is this a problem with FireFox, or XP?

The problem is with your XP setup. I have an account set up for japanese display and entry from when my fiance lived with me. Firefox displayed the japanese characters of yahoo.co.jp without issue.

Any way I can set it so that it displays them correctly? I don't need to input Japanese, but if it's on a page I want it to display correctly.

Try selecting Regional Settings from the Control Panel. In bottom half of the General tab, scroll down and tick the box next to 'Japanese'. Hit Apply and insert any disk it asks for. Might require a reboot. I think that's how you do it. (dialogue boxes might be a little different since I'm using 2k as a reference).

Now, this has no side effects other than japanese support, right? Just making sure. :P

Yeah, you can set XP up so it displays properly. I dont remember fully though. I do rememeber that you have to go to the Windows Control panel's Regional and Language settings.

I have both options for supplemental language support clicked (Languages TAB). Under the Advance TAB, i have all the different japanse options under the code conversion tables clicked.

I dont remember is that was done automatically when i installed support for supplemental languages support or done manually by me.

Aslong as you dont install entry support, I dont think so. When i installed IME entry support for my fiance, certain english character combinations displayed wrong

No side effects. Well, sorta, if your browser guesses the wrong encoding for a page, you might get some random japanese characters in the middle of sentences (usually between contractions). That can be fixed by selecting the encoding manually. Most modern browser guess correctly most of the time, though.

Thanks to all...it works like a charm now. I also enabled the ability to view menus of japanese programs in their actual language instead of the cruddy gobble-de-gook you normally see. Nice.
