Curious about a certain GBA Game

As I'm sure everyone knows, the game "Boktai" requires that the game see a little sunlight here and there.

I've never played the game, but it got me thinking... "I wonder how this game could be emulated."

Anyone know? Im not real familiar with how the cartridge works (other than an obvious solar cell/battery) but is this game playable in an emulator?

I don't know how you'd emulate the solar collecting part of it...hold a flashlight to your monitor?
I'm not sure if that part of the deal would be emulatable. Which would take some fun out of the game.

I've never played the game, but from a programming standpoint, I'd assume it would all boil down to a simple TRUE/FALSE flag of whether light is detected or not. If that's the case, perhaps the game could be hacked to include an in-game "switch" of some sort to swap between light and no light...?

Or possibly look for the memory address that might hold this flag and create a GameShark/Pro Action Replay, or similar cheat code to modify its value...?

There's a patch that hacks around the detection of the solar sensor (so the game will actually start up) and it also sets it to have sunlight all the time (in-game)...although, that'd be a double-edged sword if it's the max level like I heard. The Gun del Sol overheats easy in really heavy sunlight.

Also, this just totally defeats the purpose. Just buy the game people, please. <img src=smilies/laff.gif>

eh, I think you went straight from emulating the game to hacking it...ideally, as I think I'd rather just go out and buy it.

Well you could create an emulator for it specifficly that has a fake sun that it's intensity is controlable, so it'd be playable like the really thing. But still it'd be like trying to play an emulated Kirby Tilt n Tumble, as it defeats it perpous the gimic was designed for, unless you could say get a usb tilt controler or a usb solar detector. I mean it's like playing Duck Hunt with out the gun.

The aptch lets you adjust the quantity of sunlight that you want anytime by pressing L plus one direction of the Dpad to increase and the other to decrease (if I remember correctly). Makes the game completely playable, even to the point of being a quasi-cheat.

Ah, well I was wondering....being at full strength permanently would be a liability sometimes....I still think it's kinda pointless. :P There was a certain element of fun playing it, wandering about chasing sun beams..."Oh, I gotta go find a better spot so I can fight this vampire."
