Default VGM Player Question

Is there a VGM player out there that uses MAME's YM2612 core instead of the one from Gens? People say the Gens core is superior, but I don't believe them. Also, has anyone heard anything of the ripped Genesis audio format?

You shouldn't. All of the MAME YM2xxx and YM3xxx cores are sample-perfect - they match the output of a real chip on a digitally exact level. If you were to compare the output of MAME to the waveform output from a real chip, it would be exactly the same.

You can't get better than perfect.

The YM2612 core in MAME sounds better in the perfect sense - any inadvertant "filtering" applied by the TV itself is completely unrelated to the core itself, and as such should be added as some sort of post-processing if in fact it's that and not just people misremembering how good the Genesis sounded.

What about Kega Fusion? Is that worse than Gens, somewhere between Gens and MAME, or equal with MAME?

Doesn't really matter much to my ears though. I used the SPC700 more and still prefer it...
