princeton hack talk
heyo,
this is jhenrychunko. i'm a student at princeton university. i've been hacking/scamming ROMs from zophar for years, however, i have only just decided to take advantage of my lame ivy institution by writing about ROM hacks for a serious academic work.
so here's the idea. i'd like to open up this post to a discussion of the history, major hackers, and weirdest shit that has happened/is happening on the hacking scene.
anything you drop here will be greatly appreicated.
righteous.
cheers,
jhenrychunko

Well, can you be a little more specific as to what you're looking for? I mean, you're basically asking for any-and-all information, and that's quite a lot. It'd help to have some sort of jump-off point

Re: princeton hack talk
Yah. I've been focusing in on lay subversive hacks, and juvenile digital detournement. Effectively, the run of the mill, nazi-penis-drug-or-otherwise-f'ed-up hacks in comparison to more artful hacks (like the people at the beige programming ensemble), and the symbolic meaning of each in relation to each other.
So basically, I'm looking for interesting stories or history about the hacks (or the hackers who made hacks) like KKK bros, or the Brimley series, or the Grimlick hacks, or even the Catman hacks. Also, it would be chill if anyone had some insight on how these kinds of hacks are responded to.
Most quality hacks now seem to be level hacks, or difficulty hacks which mirror old games and no longer function to subvert the original game or push any political symbols. Why the change? Where is NES hacking going?
Any of these jump-off points would rock my long few days till dissertations are due.

Re: princeton hack talk
Farthest back I can remember, I think EFX from #emu was doing some of the earlier hack stuff back in 1994 or 95 or so. And then Daria made all those wierdass hacks like "Papergirl" where you had to throw tampons at peoples' doors ...
And that's about all I remember in terms of crappy hacks, as opposed to crappy translation hacks.

Heh, I think they were just made because when you're 15 it's pretty funny to see Mario with his cock hanging out in Super Mario Bros. Just a bunch of bored kids...no real motivation behind it. It was pretty cool back in the day to be able to change the freaking graphics in the games you grew up with, but now its just plain old and dumb to make offensive graphical hacks. There were a couple gems that stand the test of time, like Wheelchair Mario, hehe.

Re: princeton hack talk
That reminds me, anything new happening with DXO2?
I haven't really followed the boards lately, and the last news I heard about it was on romhacking.com or .net or whatever before its board exploded.

Re: princeton hack talk
I'm officially done with school as of today, so work on DXO2 is about to go ahead full tilt. To say work on it has been stagnant lately is an understatement, but there's isn't really *too* much left to be done (The biggest thing to get out of the way is the gameplay balance).
I'll say up front that almost every time I've predicted a release date turned out to be utterly wrong, but I'm shooting for around July 17th for a release, depending on how long the beta testing will take.
If not then, early autumn?

right. i see a lot of really cool work being done with complete overhauls of games (new levels, new storyline, new characters) which is really amazing -- DXO2 looks ~superb~ -- but i was wondering, what are some of the more complete straight graphics hacks? i mean, what are the favorite complete simple sprite-graphic overhauls (no code change, only pixels)? is anyone still doing these seriously, and is there any real value to it?
