Default Audio/video sync and MPlayer

OK, the last problem was too much and proved impossible to solve. This one is less time-dependent and may be a bit easier.

I've recently got decent video and sound back, so MPlayer has found itself with a job to do again, and one of those jobs is to playback speedruns from TASvideos. The problem with this is that I get audio/video sync problems on almost all of them.

Strangely, this desynching doesn't get any worse with time, it stays exactly the same even after a full hour of playback. It can also be either the video or the audio that lags, and it can be quite minor or very noticeable. Finally, all of the videos affected are h264 video with MP3 sound in AVI containers. A Matroska video downloaded from the same site is perfectly synched, some AVIs with Xvid video and MP3 sound are fine, and some more Matroska videos with h264 video and AAC sound are fine too.

All of my other videos, from Flash video to QuickTime to RealMedia play perfectly fine. It's only these videos, with that specific combination of characteristics, that do this. VLC media player seems to handle them just fine, but MPlayer has become solidified as my favourite player and I'd like to be able to do everything with it.

Are you using ALSA as your sound server?

Funnily enough, no. I can't get any sound on this system unless I set everything to use Open Sound System instead. This also means I get no sound mixing (so sounds from one application can't be heard if another is already generating sound). It's an irritating problem, and I've no idea what's causing it.

For comparison, my previous PC worked just fine with ALSA and I didn't get any audio/video sync problems either.
