Default Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death

Yay for torrents !

Anyway, I'll buy it for sure. Takes more listenings than Brave New World and Dance Of Death, but it sounds more complex, the guitars at least.

My favorite tracks are (In no order):

The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
For the Greater Good of God
The Pilgrim
Brighter than A Thousand Suns
Lord of Light
Different Worlds

Bruce is starting to sound like shit. I'm not sure if it's that his vocals have been put way higher in the mix or if he's just lost some of his range, but in recent years his voice has become rather annoying.

While listening to the album, I couldn't help but to think over and over how much better Blaze Bayley would have sounded on this one. I'm actually starting to wish he was still in the band.

The guitars are pretty kickass, though, as usual.

EDIT: I changed my mind. The guitars arrangements aren't near as complex as in previous albums like Seventh Son and X Factor. Or maybe they are, and I just can't hear them over Bruce's yelling. God damnit. Maybe I just miss Blaze.
Edited by Mikey on 08/25/06 05:16 PM.

I didn't have that impression. I loved Brave New World, Dance Of Death, Rock In Rio and Tyranny Of Souls which is pretty most his most recent works.

I liked Virtual Xi and X Factor also. Blaze's solo albums are pretty good too.

Yep. X Factor is one of my favorite Maiden albums (and I've been listening to them for 14 years). Admittedly, Virtual XI was one of their worst, but I think this was due to the band writing songs in complete disregard of Blaze's vocal style. They didn't play to his strengths.

X Factor fit his voice pretty well, and I just think that A Matter of Life & Death would have had a much more distinct sound if the vocals had been done in a style similar to X Factor. As it is, though, Bruce's now-monotone yelling on every single track has given their recent albums a very homogenized feel.

And let's face it... Iron Maiden aren't what they used to be. Their musical style has changed over the years, and it just seems to me that it's no longer befitting of them to have someone yelling (I wouldn't even call it screaming anymore) on every track.

I kinda miss the 'old Bruce', and the 'old riffs' even more... While I still love the album, it's nowhere near Powerslaves or older stuff like that. Well, in my opinion anyway.

I really like their new sound. I think they get better with each album. I like the musical direction they're taking. But Bruce's singing is getting ridiculous. Maybe if we had old Bruce with new rest of band?

Haven't heard the new one yet, but I really got into Brave New World, even from the initial listens. Dance of Death... well, I thought it was rather horrible by comparison upon my initial impressions (first few listen throughs). I haven't listened to it in a while, perhaps it'll be one of those albums that I listen to again a year later, and it just somehow "clicks" then when it never did before. At the time though, I thought Bruce's Tyranny of Souls was a better album (although Chemical Wedding is still his best solo album by far).

As for Maiden's older stuff, Powerslave is still one of my top favorites.
