Default Need to get UNIX

Ok. I got this project and the requirements state: It must be done on UNIX and must compile using G++ on a Sun workstation.

What can I do about getting UNIX? I've seen the instructor using something called PuTTY, but that's some telnet client that accesses something else using UNIX.

Unix is not free. Linux is a free unix clone. Putty is an ssh client.

You wouldn't need to get Unix for yourself, I imagine, just access a workstation that has it. Are you sure he/she didn't give you information about accessing a Sun workstation, remotely or otherwise? Suns are fairly common at universities, but you'd likely need a password or key. Are there public/student computer labs with Unix workstations?

PuTTY is pretty simple to download and use, but again, you'll probably need a password and you'll certainly need a host to connect to. If you're at a college or university, they might have some information about computer availability on their website.

Not officially. I did write down the address he puts in during class and can connect using my account. I mainly wanted to get UNIX to test it on here so I wouldn't have to keep uploading the file (I don't know how to upload it yet anyway) and test it. I planned to use Notepad++ to work on it and not one of those evil text editors.

Well, I dunno what you're writing, but a linux compiler is usually good enough for testing. You just want to make sure to do the final compilation on the Sun.

Not until Leopard comes out. Tiger's not UNIX certified, but Leopard will be.

Isn't that just semantics? All it takes is money to be certified UNIX, I thought. Besides, I thought Darwin was based on BSD, which is UNIX-like, but not actually UNIX, right?

Maybe you could explain the whole thing a little better to me.

Cross compiling c++ is touchy unless it's _very_ standard stuff...the best way to gurantee that it's going to compile (probably the only way) would be to edit and compile the program remotely on the Sun workstation in question. :> PuTTY is a client that should allow you to connect remotely, they should provide instructions on how to get it running.

Can't you just install Solaris on a spare computer and test it that way?
