Doubtful. The point I was making is that in American politics, everything is up for debate. Catholic doctrine is not up for debate. If a majority of Americans claiming to be Catholic think abortion is alright, that doesn't make it all right.
If it came out like I was saying he doesnt have free speech, that wasn't the point. My point was as expression at my frustration at how the conclave was portrayed (in the media) as some kind of twisted US election and that suddenly every Catholic precept was up in the air and dependent on the new pope.
The Church is not a democracy. It's a dictatorship with god as the dictator. It's the job of the church, led by the pope, to determine what that means.

The choice the church made in electing the new Pope disappointed me. I expected them to pick a more liberal Pope, one that would appeal more to today's generation, but boy was I wrong. It seems like they're going out of their way to run the church into the ground. It's bad enough they get their kicks out of molesting altar boys but isn't this too much?

It is not the churches job to bend and twist to "appeal to today's generation" Its not the church's job to submit to whatever you define as "liberal."

The church did that? I thought it was some priests. I must have missed the church ecumenical council where they inserted dogma about raping children.
And from your word choice of "they get their kicks...," I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you aren't Catholic. You are just another person who wants the Church to go away as a voice of morality that makes you uncomfortable. You wrap it in words like "they are not progressive enough," but you really just don't like what the church has to say on a basic level. Let me know if I'm wrong.

and stuff about

Unfortunately the mistake of the church was to move suspect pedophile priest around. Considering how big the church is, the fault lays with the cardinals and any higher ups (and lowers) who knew of a pedophile and never reported. Sure it is a black mark against the beuracracy of the catholic church, but it is not a mark against the religious beliefs.

Afterall, pedophiles dont go towards the priesthood because of the celibacy vow. They go for easy access to children (just like they become teachers, big brothers, boy scout leaders, coaches, ect.)

You know what's fun? About 10 years ago I was a good little catholic boy. Hell I was even an altar boy. And we had this priest there that everyone hated. This guy was all fire and brimstone and pretty much railed that all of the parishoners were going to burn in hell. Except that the 2 "head altarboys" got to do whatever the hell they wanted. (The church was connected to a private school which almost all the parishoners children happened to attend). At the time jokes abounded about why they were called the "head" altar boys and got special priviliges, and after a few years the guy finally left. Much rejoicing. A few months ago I am reading the local paper, and I see that he is under investigation for molesting children while he was a priest at our church.

Oh, and the guy before him was switched for touching little girls. And the guy who came after him died and it later turns out he may have been going on retreats with homosexual men. It seems that all the bad priests get shipped to our church. I'm just waiting for the nigerian guy the sent us a few years ago to get transferred for something.

I would just like to also state that these events were told to me long after I had ceased my catholic duties, so I don't give the impression that I let a few bad priests ruin my religion for me.

I'm gonna go on record as saying that I don't think Catholicism is any less ridiculous than most religions out there. That's not saying much, of course, but you know...

While I don't get involved in the religious discussions here, this time I will.
The last Pope was a major world figure - in doing good. This man had more of an effect on the world than a few of the presidents we had during his "reign" so to speak.
I'm not catholic, but I have to believe if most of the people who picked the last pope were there to pick this one, there must be a good reason.
Just my two cents.
