I went to EFnet once, I didn't like it much.

I don't see much reason to move from EsperNet really. It's stable and has enough features for easy channel management. Those who are serious about IRC will have a new server to connect to and a new nickname to register, but that's a 60 second job. I don't think being on a somewhat obscure network will stop us from doing anything we want to with #zophar. If anything, a small network is better as there's less chance of netsplits, it's easier to get attention when there are problems, and it's less likely your first choice of username will be taken.

So I vote against any move. I just see no good reason to.

I want a move to freenode so that I don't have to connect to yet another server (3 is enough already ;/)

I connect to four, it's not that hard.

The Magic 8-Ball says "Don't count on it".

The channel is somewhat in limbo now though. It's the semi-official channel and and I can keep it running on a day to day basis for a while, but some official pronouncements about the management and future of the channel would be appreciated.

Indeed. I second that motion. I just asked for an answer about Zophar's Domain official IRC channel.

I pretty much hang out in #pubes on irc.freenode.org. esper.net was always terrible. lots of RO flood kiddies ruining bandwidth and ircops without the skill to keep up. freenode is the best choice if you're not going to spend time in the old hangouts on EFnet.

the best choice would be a move to freenode for reliability and just plain awesomeness, where you could join #zsnes, #mednafen, and countless other channels owned by emu developers.

it's where what's left of the scene has moved.

you know, outside of ZD.

What I don't like about freenode is that it doesn't seem to have username expiration. Someone registered my preferred username on Jan 14 17:24:00 2005, last used it on Jan 14 19:59:35 2005 (so they used it for an absolute maximum of two and a half hours, three and a half years ago), and because of that I can't use it. I know it wasn't me because address is from Rogers, a Canadian ISP.

I know all IRC networks have their own dumb policies, but that one really irritates me in particular. Not being able to use any of my preferred usernames is what always put me off larger networks, and not expiring unused usernames makes the problem even worse.

OK, to answer Gil-Galad's question he PM'd me, I don't really know the first thing about IRC. All I remember is using it god knows when to get some illegal files from god knows who. I don't even remember what the deal with servers and channels is, and why one would be better than another.

To that effect, I don't know what would "official endorsement" of the chatroom entail either.

However, I did a small check of IRC plugins for vbulletin, and I came across this one:

If we can get something like this running, there may be a point. Otherwise, if we just tell people "this is the server, this is the channel, come check us out", I doubt anyone will bother.

The PJIRC plugin would probably be a good idea (you may also want to point out Mibbit, which doesn't require Java), but I do think placing the details of the channel on the site would help too. Anything to raise awareness of its existence really. I'd advise recommending ChatZilla and XChat as clients, anything to lessen the amount of mIRC users.

As for official endorsements, it's seen as the official ZD IRC channel, so it's effectively your channel. Say that it's OK for me to own and manage the channel on an indefinite basis, and I'll take that as an official endorsement of the status quo.
