Default Metroid assembly

Ok, so I got the source code off of romhacking.net (metroid for NES) and I made a few changes, but here's my problem:
I have Nesasm, x816 assembler, and I tried assembling the rom, but i'm having problems. The procedure is a little unclear.
See it says that the source code can be reasembled with x816, but it gives me a .bin file of 17 kb, which i can convert to .nes at 9kb... Which doesn't run, as the game and the source code are at 196 kb, so that's obviously the wrong method.
Then I try assembling it with nesasm, i made it into a .asm and converted, but all i get is ''767 syntax errors found!''.
So I figure the source code is dammaged, so I try to dissasamble a Metroid rom using various dissasemblers designed for nes, and they all are unable to dissasemble the file. Other Nes roms work fine...
Any help?
Thanks.
