Default picture quality question

Okay, I'm a newbie and I know nothing about emulation, so try to treat me with the same patience you would accord a very elderly relative. Actually, no, come to think of it, try to treat me with rather more patience than that...

Anyway, I have looked about for FAQs and such so hopefully I'm not being one of those impossible morons who insists on asking a question that's already been answered in 700 places.

On all of my emulators, the picture quality is very pixellated. I can live with it, but I was just wanting to check what is normal. On Gens, for example, in windowed mode the picture quality is roughly what I would expect, ie not noticeably worse than when running a Genesis console through a TV. However, if I want the picture to be large enough to see from a distance of further than, say, four inches, it gets pretty rough around the edges. It's the same for me with SNES and NES emulation.

Should I a) stop my whining, or b) do something about it? If b), then what?

Cheers,

Dope

that's just the native resolution of the consoles. when played on a blurry tv, everything looks fine. when played on a crisp monitor at a 'high' resolution such as 800x600, then the pixels are clearly visable. it's the same thing you've been seeing since you were a kid, just on newer technology and sharper images, you can see all the details. there are filters such as 2xsai and other stuff to try and make the image more appropriate for higher resolutions, you can try them. there's also ones that just blur the image, which look more like a tv.

I personally prefer hq2x or hq3x if the emulator has them. It preserves the original look of the game completely while smoothing out the jaggies, giving you an absolutely sweet picture. Then again, they eat CPU Cycles for breakfast, so you need a fast processor.

What emus have these? I don't think I have seen any. Maybe I'm just blind.

Every filter besides 2xSai makes everything look like Claymation to me (even hq2x and scale2x). The worse case example is the Super Eagle filter.

2xSai is the only one that smooths the image out without giving things that pastey look. At least I think so. It's the only filter I can stand to use... it's 2xSai or nothing for me.

Zsnes does...and I think Virtual Boy Advance (not the CE version), as do some N64 and PSX graphics plug-ins. That's all I can think of.
