The game itself simulates the characters being reflected off of a flat mirrored floor. Presumably the mirror operates on the same principle as those illusion mirror-bowl things that create a mirage of an image hovering in the air instead of being directly up against the mirror as it actually is, to create the holographic 3D mid-air look.
