Having barely played DW4, I don't know a whole lot about it but I've yet to see a game that really needs to have it's difficulty inflated artificially. Any player who wants more of a challenge can generally do so within the natural confines of the game. For instance, I've beaten the original Dragon Warrior without using any weapons what-so-ever. (No, you don't need Erdrick's Sword to damage the Dragon Lord. You have to *find* Erdrick's Sword but you can then immediately warp back to the castle and sell the sword in Brecconary for 1GP while retaining the ability to do damage to the Dragon Lord.)

As for the DS version "looking and sounding gross", that's easy enough to fix. Replace the DS graphics and sound with those from the NES. And it's generally pretty simple to remove particular weapons.

But hey, it's your project so it's not my place to tell you how to do it. I'm sure the other two people who will play it will enjoy it.
