I know how to make ISO images of discs, but those aren't always 1:1 copies. I know about software like Alcohol 120% but I'm cheap :-P Anyone know how to do this with free software?

Go with a CRT. Flat panels are a pain for games, because of all the stretching and possibly smearing. CRTs also have better color. And whatever you do, don't get a widescreen, or most of your games...
