Retail Disc games that require Valve's Steam

I was wondering...I was thinking about getting the standalone disc version of Portal for my father, but he has a crud internet connection. I know you have to install steam, but the game installs from the actual disc, doesn't it (on these games that require Steam)?

Looking at comments on Amazon I was a bit confused at this...it wouldn't make much sense to have to download the game when it could just be on the disc, but I'm just checking to make sure. Does it need an active internet connection to boot? It seems like once the game is installed it shouldn't.

The game is on the disk but you need to install and install Steam and you have to make an account and then you can play online.

My question is if the game'll start if you aren't connected to the internet. He has dial up...it'd be really annoying to have to connect each time you want to play.

I suppose I should just try it tommorow on my copy downloaded from Steam. Behaviour on that version of the game could be different though.

I don't have dial up and I used Half-Life 2 which is a little older so I'm unsure on those variants.

Hmm...on the download version, you have to connect or Steam shall not start, but the game works fine in offline mode once Steam is started.

If the disc version is like that, that's kind of annoying. :P

Half Life 2 worked though offline? Perhaps the disc version of Portal works as well.

No wait, nevermind...I guess it does work as I expected. Apparently either my computer or steam got confused when I yanked the ethernet cable.
