"those who object to an atheist delivering an invocation can only use arguments that serve to undermine having invocations at all."

Yeah, that about sums it up. While the invocation doesn't really have a place at a government function, I can't blame people at all for being upset about an athiest delivering it. They were expecting a prayer, as I would at any invocation, and they received nearly the complete opposite. So, yeah, of course they were upset.

But they didn't receive anything. They refused to let the man speak and walked out. They didn't even have the courtesy to listen to what he had to say before deeming it offensive. Just because he was unlikely to start his words with "Heavenly Father" or "Yo God" doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a meaningful.

It's kind of sad that their religion is so weak that they can't even pray on their own and must be led by someone else. Clearly, they believe that anyone who doesn't share their views would be able to address his or her higher power or belief system on their own, so what does it say about their own faith that they're unable to do so themselves?

If there were no invocation, then they would likely pray by themselves beforehand. Now, like I said before, it had no place at the meeting, but you can't change the fact that it was there. Since an invocation is used to invoke a higher power, having an athiest perform one is downright insulting. It is a mockery of what an invocation actually is.

To put it into terms to which you can likely relate, a Christian would be as upset by an Athiest giving the invocation as an Athiest would be by the fact that there was even an invocation in the first place.

I'm an atheist and I'd be more likely to just sit there and tune out while the Christians say whatever the hell they want. Afterwards, we can get down to the real, important issues.

Next time an atheist commits murder, I'll post an article showing you that all atheists are blood-thirsty murderers. Taking an isolated incident to force an argument against an entire people is very sad. <img src=smilies/headshake.gif>

Yeah, I totally said all Christians are intolerant Neanderthals. Oh wait. I didn't.

"While Great Falls chews on its defeat, the plaintiff Wynne seeks surcease. Her home has been vandalized nine times. Hoodlums have killed her cat and hanged its gutted body. Someone put sand in the gas tank of her truck. Townspeople have ostracized her. Even so, she comes across over the telephone as the most cheerful Witch I ever met. My acquaintance is limited, to be sure, but in this one I stand on the lady’s side."

People are fucking morons. That's just stupid(in regards to her house being vandalized etc).

The quote that you have for the subject line is correct. The articles in question, while not reported from a third party, are stupid. Christians are supposed to love and respect everyone, regardless of their beliefs. It's things like this (and it happens ALL the time) that give us a bad name. And it annoys me to no end. The only thing that would warrant me walking out on an atheist speaker would be if he personally offended me, which wouldn't really have anything to do with the fact that they were atheist.
