PS3 Emu Help

I've just recently gotten back into emulating. I've been playing around with PSX games. I noticed the PS3's computer-like capabilities and am wondering if an unmodded PS3 can run a PSX emulator, or if it's possible to burn a PSX rom to a CD and play it in my PS3. Any help would be highly appriciated.

Apparently there is an emulator or two that runs via BD-Java (the Java that BluRay discs use for menus and interactive content), but I dont' know the specifics, only that there is a NES emulator.

I was actually thinking that installing linux could offer more emulation support over the ps3. I have yet to get a working ps3 again to test my theory however.

Actually, I forgot about Linux. You may have a point there.

Pretty sure even with linux at this point they can't access the ps3 memory or some such (or whatever that piracy prevention measure is, might be gpu access even) making the possibility of a psx emulator an impossibility.

GPU access is definitely restricted. It's all Nvidia stuff, and Nvidia are notorious for keeping information on the internals of their chips as secret as possible. Even developers with an actual need to know how their stuff worked have talked about how difficult it is to worm the information out of them.

It's certainly possible to make emulators for it though. There's a perfectly workable port of SDLMAME readily available that runs off the HD, so I see no specific reason why a PlayStation emulator wouldn't work. It may even be possible at some point to have a workable third-party PlayStation 2 emulator on the PlayStation 3, but I wouldn't count on anything like that arriving any time soon.

I think there is also a SNES Emulator for the PS3. Any Java based emulator has to suck in my opinion...
