The state of emulation when you first visited ZD...

ZSNES was at 0.400, Genecyst and NESticle were less than a few days from their final x.xx releaes.

Well, all I can remember is that Zsnes didn't have a win port or any port for that matter other than the DOS one. Other than that, I can't remember. O_o

ZSNES was still for DOS (first version I used was 0.9891c), DGen was a great Genesis emulator and MAME was still releasing 'beta' versions.

ZSNES hadn't come out yet, and the translation of Final Fantasy five wsa still taking a long time. The scene was like, a fuckton smaller and abstractly named websites dminated (Like Zophar's Domain! Coolest name ever! Classicgaming had just gotten started as the first commercially oriented ROM site (#@!) run by Fragmaster, or Kevin Bowen, who people didn't seem to like very much for some reason.

Ah, the good old days...

To be honest, I don't really remember at what point I actually came across ZD. But my first emulator experience was someone introducing me to VSMC and SNES Professional '96 (or something like that).

I downloaded VSMC last month to try it out, and I was very upset when it did NOT work at all. <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I was looking for Genesis roms, IIRC, and browsing around various emu sites. ZSNES wasn't out, Snes9x was just breaking onto the scene, and I was doing most of my emulation in Genecyst and Nesticle.

I remember the first few releases of ZSNES clearly, because it was the first emu that I could find that actually let me legibly enter a name in Secret of Mana.

Can't remember the exact moment, but there was some controversy or something about Ultra 64, or whichever emu it was, not using D3D and sticking with Glide.

ZSNES and Snes9x had a lot of competition with another. NESticle was at v0.42 and Genecyst was king. N64 emulation had barely been touched (way before UltraHLE). And MAME was cooler.

Lessee... iNES was the emulator of choice, Marat was still generally referred to as a dickhead, GameBoy emulation was pretty solid and #emu on EFnet was the place to hang out.

Also, ZD was pretty much a brand new site. :)

all i remember was that there was snes9X and i think it was v1.34 (all i remember is that transparency didn't work right and i ended up loosing my way in ff5's sunken ship area 'cause I couldn't see.) Nesticle had reached x.xx. thats about all i remember, because i didn't emulate anything more than snes and nes at the time. (after i found ZD i switched to zsnes, which didn't have a windows port, i believe this was 0.9891a that i used but i am sure of the fact that i used 0.9891c )

I think about the time I came to ZD this board had a Next-Gen Emulation section and Bloodlust Software. And acmlm had the most posts, and I think he was admin of the board as well. I think the board had a red or green color scheme in some places.

Ah, that's right...I came in around that time as well I think, but probably closer to the time Zophar left than you did. That's a good way to mark the time, I hadn't really thought about that.

Yeah, and you could only play the demo in like shades of yellow-green or some shit.

Thank goodness for the iNES format for ROMs, because the Pasofami split format majorly sucked the proverbial dog's nuts IMHO.

i prolly first discovered ZD at about the same time... i since had forgotten about it when we had a fire (a yr or two after) and i couldn't use a comp anymore... then i rediscovered ZD prolly about a year or two later (after having forgot)

it was when i became certain of the demise of Iron CLAD that i decided to join the message board... i can't remember the year, but i'm sure it is in my profile somewhere

zophar.malicia.net (i think - i may not remember correctly)

I discovered ZSNES years ago. Long before Swampy owned the site. I discovered the site through another site. This site mirrored ZD almost exaclty. It even used ZD links to ZD stored downloads.. That is how i found out about ZD. I went to the source of a link. The ass was un ethically claiming all the news and ZD work as his own.

Hmm. The website URL wasnt even zophar.net back then. IT was zophar.malicia (or somthing like that). At the time to, it was news when the ZD counter reached certian visitor numbers.

I initially registered with the boards but never stayed. I found them uninteresting. I visited the site for emulation news for a few years after that until sometime last year or the year before (i forgot) i registered with the message boards again

Re: The state of emulation when you first visited ZD...

God do I feel old thinking about this...

zSNES did not exist yet, Snes9x was out of development during the time due to Nintendo, RPGe was just finishing up their FF5 patch v0.96, NESticle was the best NES emulator, ZD had just switched to the current layout it has now (albiet there's been changes since then), Demi had his own ROM hacking board (which I used to read after school for pure entertainment - the flame wars were hilarious!), oh hell, you can read more about it http://blog.carlocostino.com/archive...whence_i_c.phphere</a> if you're still interested at this point. :-)

It's been a long time indeed... I didn't post to the boards until about 2 years after I got involved, under the name Azrael. Now I'm gettting back in due to one of the classes I am taking in grad school: history of electronic games and media. It's definitely interesting to see how it's changed since and in the time I've more or less been dormant. Good post to come back to. :-)

Heh...VSMC really brings back memories. Just think, if he had open sourced it back then, we'd still be playing it today! And he'd probably have gotten a ton in donations compared to what he got selling VSMC. ZD has come a long way as well...it's really the only emulation site (sorry) that's kept its usefulness after all these years. I still remember Brad getting mad when I would always host the emulators locally because it used ZD's bandwidth, but hey, it was more convenient for users <img src=smilies/thumb.gif> Looks like they still do it mostly, which is great! Most of the emulator sites go down, but you can always rely on ZD. Swampgas has done a great job keeping it going...even though he apparently let usernames on this board expire <img src=smilies/flipa.gif> Just kidding ya Swampgas...good job. I am surprised and flattered you never changed the board name from "talk of the town" as well!

Re: The state of emulation when you first visited ZD...

I can't quite remember, but I know it was before this:
http://web.archive.org/web/199904282...ww.zophar.net/

Because I remember the talk on the ZMD boards about how, uh... (correct me if I'm wrong) Demi from NeoForce 'designed' the ZD logo, or something.

I remember that NESticle by Bloodlust was _the shit_ that would play damn near any NES ROM I could think to throw at it. The DOS version was better than the Windows version, but I always had trouble getting sound working in it for some reason.

I remember No$GB was the best FREE gameboy emulator out there. It could stretch the screen out and you could choose between black and white or the pea-green emulation. I seem to remember they were working on Super Gameboy emulation, which originally was little more than grabbing the border and displaying it around the black and white emu screen.

SNES emulation was pretty new. You had to have multiple emus at the time, though. SNES '95 emulated games differently from SNES '96, and talk of two new emulators, zSNES and SNES9X were really tearing through the scene. zSNES was going to be coded in assembly language for speed, while SNES9X was going to take part of SNES '95, and part of SNES '96, and jumble them together HOPEFULLY with good after-effects.

I also remember that the SNES emulators of the time really didn't have any UI, so you'd have to use command-line flags to choose whether to enable the experimental sound cores, mode 7 emulation, or whether you were using a "HIROM" or "LOROM" dump. That led to the popular "Emu Frontend" market. ;)

More advanced stuff, like the Playstation and N64 were whispers, but really all we wanted was a good SNES emulator to play Chrono Trigger on.

I can't remember, wasn't there a shareware SNES emulator that displayed everything in shades of BROWN until you registered it?

Genecyst was the shit for the Sega freaks, and Callus was used more than MAME for speed. Retrocade was being talked about, the first multi-arcade emulator with a 'rich' UI. I remember there was a lot of anger surrounding that project, with more than a few accusations of stolen code.

Hm... That's really all I remember, and even then that was probably over the course of several months, if not a year or two.

Let's see... I didn't have a computer of my own yet, and the only FF4 translation was a terrible patch that stuck FF2us' dialogue in the game, but it only translated the intro or something like that.

Later, I still didn't have a computer, but I got word that the first full version of J2e's FF4 translation was out, so I downloaded it and Snes9x to play at school.

Yeah, I found this place because I wanted to play FF4 "hardtype" before I owned a computer.

Heh, blow up the FF2us font, color it blue, shadow it with navy, draw a light blue line down the center of each letter (Why didn't I put the fade across all the letters...?), use the blur tool in Gimp.

Yeah, I also have one of the worst staff icons...

Late 97/early 98 some time. I found out I could play FF5 in English, and that sealed the deal. This was back in the day when you needed extra add-on software to handle VESA 2.0 on most video cards. You had to play with turning certain layers on and off in ZSNES to get past a certain part of FF5 if you didn't have them.

I want to say ZSNES was version 0.2x-0.3x at the time. But you're really asking me to wrack my brain, there.

I think I came here first in 2001, maybe 2002...I was just getting into Emulation back then, but those were the times when ROM sites were scarce...I only started frequenting the Message Boards later on, like this year.

Hah, I remember being so confused by this when I first found out about emulation, why (Chrono Trigger for example) didn't have transparency...had to make do with the 'fake' Vesa 2 mode the old version of Zsnes had. Mode Q was it?

Hm, all I remember about ZD when I first started coming by was that SNES emulation was in its infancy (no sound unless you had SNES96 for linux <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>), and that EMUNews was my favorite emulation site. ;D it was something like http://users.aol.com/emunews/

I started with Backyard Emulation Links. Surprisingly enough, despite being inactive for nearly seven years now, the site's still up.

NESticle was at version 0.2, and the best Gameboy emulator was Gameboy '97. (Well, iNES and Virtual Gameboy DOS were technically superior at that point, but they were shareware). SNES97 was the best SNES emulator, as I don't even think ZSNES existed then.

Also, ZD was still on Malicia.com. :p

damn, if I didn't think I knew better, I'd place a bet on you being either PACHUKA or InVerse in disguise.

There was some flash file back in the day that PACHUKA made that even Zophar thought was fucking hilarious, even though it was him being made fun of in it. I can't remember what it was about though, except that it had a clip from Army of Darkness where he says "My name is Ash, and I am a slave."

Well, I guess someone could make one about PACHUKA that's like "My name is PACHUKA, and I am a twice convicted sex offender. I can't even get wood for a girl over 17."

Trivia time:

1) The background was taken from Megaman Battle Network concept art.
2) The text was made using Paint Shop Pro 7 (which I still use).
3) I had to choose between the first three letters hitting the top or the y hitting the bottom due to size restrictions. One more vertical pixel would've fixed this.

The Nesticle source code had just been stolen, Damaged Cynbernetics had closed down, Node99 kicked ass.

It was around '98 if I recall correctly.
Massage was the emulator of choice for Master System/Gamegear games, and a search for it turned up this site.
I'm pretty sure ZD had a different URL back then, less'n the page I bookmarked was a mirror.
It's hard to believe it was really that long ago. <img src=smilies/headshake.gif>

Haha, I recall that one.
It was pretty funny... Too bad all those craptastic flash animations are gone forever since emucult is defunct.

I remember one where Zophar gets assraped too.

I dunno, I've been banned so many times.... I've been in and out of here for something like 3-4 years.
I've been into emulation for a lot longer, but haven't been very active in the community.
