Where's the Beef??

Hmmm, let me think for a moment. Yeah, I've been around the emulation scene since June of 1996, can't remember the exact date when I started messing around with emulators or the time that I first registered on Zophar's Domain message board.

In all this time I've never had a complaint or wanted to speak out about anything that I felt was wrong. As I don't whine and I am not a drama scene whore trying to get attention. In fact I've been debating for awhile now about writing this post in saying that I am not satisfied with the task that this community is supposed to represent.

I've heard many things over and over again about this site dying because of the lack of updates, unable to develop a new design/theme for the community. Staff hired that are unwilling to work here for long (there is a good reason for that, usually). Not only to mention the now overwhelming annoyances of the ads that could contain a security threat to your computer at any moment. But also, I feel that the ads placed on the site are blantanly commercial in nature which suggests that the site is being viewed by its administrator more as a commercial vehicle than as a resource to serve the emulation community.

I myself, I feel that I have the right to file a complaint against this site. I've paid my dues here and even worked here for a period of time. I know a lot about the inner workings of this site and how it's operated and the procedures, etc. I can tell you this point blank. There is one man that is holding the community back, he is our "great" administrator by the name of SwampGas.

Out of all the negatives that I can easily mention, there is only one positive in the entire deal. The site and the message board are still here and functional to some extent, even though dramatically out of date (seriously folks).

Over the years I've watched him sit around and do nothing while others worked hard at updating, reworking the various sections to what it is today. Many people have submitted many website designs, only to be "rejected out-of-hand" again. SwampGas has not wanted to change the design because he IS lazy. And then treated many people like crap in flapping his jaws in the general chatter threads and whining about his women treating him like crap. (That's the reason and explanation to one of his comments saying that people abandoned him and the community). Many ideas were also submitted and then rejected because he hasn't wanted to do the work, apparently.

One such idea was to allow the community to make the updates themselves. This idea is a very sound one in my opinion. In fact, this idea is a very successful one in other places. This would take a load off of the staff and the main administrator, assuming that all goes well with it.

In a given community, a "Main Administrator" is supposed to be the central figure in the community and the driving force in which the site prospers. Not so with SwampGas, he has slowly made the site unpopular with a lot of people that don't want nothing to do with the site anymore. Like a famous political leader (won't mention his name, nor want to discuss politics), has made a lot of stupid decisions and has lost respect in the world. I believe that is YOU SWAMPGAS!!.

As for this site being just a file archive... are you willing to settle for that? Is that your excuse to avoid the work to keep this site from being as great as it used to be? Zophar's Domain is an emulation community, a hub of the emulation scene, and not a mere file archive that gets by on inertia alone, a shadow of its former glory. Know it. Remember it. Acknowledge what ZD is supposed to be. Keep the dream alive!

Yeah, go ahead and make excuses about what I just said. Go ahead and delete the post. Let me know how insecure you are about the truth.

Now.. you have the complaint. Start listening to people for a change and do something about it. I am tired of seeing this site slip into a pile of dogshit. For example, what happened to the update for this passing anniversary of the site????? That is just Inexcusable!!

(To tell all of you guys, I am not the only one that feels this way.)

I like how its this board is small now but I wouldn't mind if this place became huge again with moogle unbanned and back. I found it fun to read those posts.

I think there's more to the scene being dead than that. Chalk it up to two factors:

1 - A lot of the original contributors who are familiar with SNES, NES, Genesis games have grown up, gotten jobs, and don't have the time/interest to contribute.
2 - The new generation of would-be rom hackers/emulator programmers are faced with systems that are much more difficult to emulate and hack (PS2, Dreamcast, etc.)

Or maybe we're in a "gap" here where the generation who's grown up on GBA isn't old enough to have nostalgia/skills and start aiming for translations etc.

Actually, I am not talking about the "scene" being dead as an entire entity. I am talking about Zophar's Domain as a website and community.

I know of many other places where the activity is top notch, lots of talent and development going on that would never cease to be amazing to my mind.

Zophar's Domain is a world of it's own. I am stating that it needs to improve itself to be what it should be.

As far as the people moving onwards with life. This is very true and one day I may move on myself, but today is not that day.

I will say this for a fact. Emulation is not near dead as thought of. This site needs some life breathed into it, to become alive once again. There are many more things going on outside of this here community. Perhaps if the news were to be updated here, you all would know about these things. But I digress....

10 years ago I would have cared about your silly argument and internet fight, having to defend my internet honor. I'm now a grown man who's nearly 30 living an excellent life....wonderful career that pays extremely well, a house, lots of neat hobbies and a nice car. You, sir, are a sad little man obsessing over a HOBBY.

But to answer your question, I haven't controlled ZD for quite a long time. I haven't even the access to do it.

There are lots of greats in emulation. Some are still around, some have gracefully bowed out, some "quit the scene", some outright disappeared, some of whom I'll never know their true identify despite tremendous contributions (Death Adder). I'm not one of them. Stop making me out to be some great leader who controls the entire emulation community.

So who actually is in charge of this site? Everyone I've talked to seems to think you are. (People with subdomains, for example)

You Sir, have accepted a job and a responsibility to run a community. You obviously don't care about the site and your obvious "I don't care attitude" has rubbed off on a lot of people. Once again I will refer to something I said up above. An administrator is the central figure and driving force in the community.

As far as your comment about being obsessed. I will defend myself for one moment. Obsessing and being passionate about something or anything in this life are two different things. I would say that I am passionate about a lot of things, one of them would be emulation. I take pride in the things that I do and admire many others and their projects.

So tell me something, SwampGas. If you don't have access to the site, why couldn't you have made arrangements so that the site could be updated? Assuming that you don't have access to it as stated.

Also, if you don't have access to the site. Who does have access to it?

Hm, you make some good points. I remember my time as a staffer, for awhile I felt like I was the only person doing any kind of updating (behind the scenes or on the front page). I wanted to help, but for as much work as I did at the time I didn't expect to be treated as 'slave labor' or something like that. I don't expect a cookie, but come on....anyone who's been a staffer is a volunteer, I don't think you get to yell at them as if you are their boss in some crappy 9 to 5 job.

I know some people who weren't updating because they just didn't have the time (life is insane sometimes, so I understand) but I think a lot of them lost interest because of things like this.

> Hm, you make some good points.

I am glad that you think that I make some good points. I only want to see this place do a little better than what it has been doing.

Let's be realistic for a moment. It's absolutely ridiculous to not post about the site's anniversary for one.

I honestly feel this place is in denial. Think about it for a moment. I've read a few threads where many excuses are made such as site only being a file archive, etc.

If one person done 1-2 updates a week, that would be a hell of a lot better than what has been going on for the last couple of years.

Ideas about how this place should maintain the site and administrate need to be changed to meet with the times so that this place doesn't suffer from stagnation. This place is getting awefully stagnant. Can't you see it?

As far as people wanting to work here. I've seen SwampGas reject a lot of people that could have worked here. Those people could have been staff. Instead, he has slowly reduced the staff to nothing.

It's time for the main administrator to start thinking intelligently on how to solve some of the problems that this site is facing. There are usually solutions to many things. For example, if you guys started being productive right now, this very moment. I can see this site within a years time becoming great once again, maybe.

I think that all of you moderators on the message board should become staff and post updates on the main page, 1-2 times a week starting now. That's not too much to ask, is it? It takes 5-20 minutes tops to make a post. If you have time to post on the message board all of the time. Wouldn't you have the time to make a post on the main page of the site? Something to think about.

Yeah, it would...one of the reasons the site kind of 'died' I'm sure is because of this. Most of the staff were either MIA or not posting anything.

Can't, sorry. I don't know why you're still going on about this. Swamp already explained that none of us have access. At least, I don't anymore, so I assume no one else does either.

I'm so tired of these "Sam is keeping ZD down" threads. If you dislike him so much and want a great emulation site like the ZD of old, why don't you create your own site? Seriously, webspace and domains are cheap and content management software is free and easy to use.

ZD is dead. Stop talking about a revival and move on,

Hm, what happened, anyhow? Well, if you don't mind me asking anyway (if it's not like classified info or something :p). Just curious...

I know there were some issues with the system, but before at least a few people had access, though that was quite awhile ago so it's not neccesarily the case now...don't want you to think I'm posting in this thread to argue with anybody.

My SFTP access isn't working anymore. Without that, I can't upload anything. I'm assuming whoever is in charge now disabled all the old users. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

Well, it would be nice if all of you guys made some type of stand and tried to figure out a way to post and promote the site. Believe me, I honestly think that you guys could do it. Just have to figure out a way around some of the problems. Including SwampGas' statement about no access.

Yes, that's right. All we have is words as so many of them are important. Especially when it comes to news, media and journalism.

Seriously, webspace and domains are cheap and content
management software is free and easy to use.

Actually, I don't recall once saying that I specificly dislike or hate SwampGas. I have stated that SwampGas was not doing his job according to all appearances and lack of material being posted on this site, in a lot more words, sure.

Why should another site be created when you already have a site right here. All the resources that you need are at your disposal. All you guys need to do is figure out how to solve some of the problems. Such as access to the FTP, site updater and the like.

> ZD is dead. Stop talking about a revival and move on,

I can't believe that you are willing to accept that ZD is dead. I can't raise your spirits or anyone elses if you're unwilling to beleive that something can be done.

I don't think you quite understand. No one who posts on these forums (as far as I know) has access to do anything with the site. We don't have SFTP access to upload or modify anything, and the old news system is defunct.

If you're interested in helping out with some new version of the site, I suggest you try to make contact with the new owner(s) and go from there.

Because the site is stuck in 1992. ZD is a bunch of static html pages (as far as I can tell). You need a new website here. You need a new staffing engine, a new way to dynamically list and sort and search for emulators/docs/etc, and a new way to submit/process/post news. If all you do is try to "fix" ZD, you'll end up running into the same exact situation we're in now.

You aren't going to ever "fix" ZD. If you do anything, it'll be creating a new site, naming it ZD, and taking all of its traffic along with it.

And that, of course, is what everyone is after: site traffic. Nobody wants to make their own emulation site and have to deal with it possibly being a failure or having to stick with it while you're still slowly gaining members. Every time I see these threads, all I see is someone saying "give me the zophar.net domain". Sam clearly has no desire to ever give up the domain (and that's assuming he even truly owns it). These sort of requests always fall on deaf ears.

Honestly, if not to inherit the site traffic, what is the motivation? Why do you want to bring back ZD when you could just make the next ZD?

I can understand the nostalgia factor and not wanting to see such a great site fall into (further) disarray, but, in ZD's case, you're way too late.

If you're looking for something along the lines of the old "scene", just make another site. If you give them a place to gather, they will come. You don't need a big ZD logo at the top of the site for them to realize what's going on.

Really now. There have been so many posts just like yours and the only thing holding them back is the fact that they can't take control of the zophar.net domain and traffic. You. Don't. Need. Them. Gather up your like-minded idealists and just do it. You don't need ZD to have what ZD used to be.
