Transparent PNGs with the GIMP

I just want to freaking convert my BMPs to PNG with a transparent color

Is there a way to do this in the Gimp that doesn't require 8 steps? I have quite a few files I want to do this too. And I can't figure out this program for the life of me.

Any help appreciated.

So I have to MANUALLY ERASE the portions of the image I want to be transparent? What the fuck is that?

I'm looking at the Color to Alpha option, but there's no eye-dropper. Do I have to figure out the RGB values and input them by hand?

Is there a less stupid free program I can use to do this task? I have over 100 files I need to convert, and if this is the process the Gimp is turning out to be as useful as a lump of coal.

EDIT - I still have Irfanview, but I'm less than confident in its conversion to PNG capabilities -- plus I didn't see any option to make a color transparent (though maybe I missed it?)

Uh, no? Just select the color with the magic wand and delete it all at once, just like in Photoshop.

I use a little program called photofiltre which altough not free (there is a free version with limited functionality) it had many basic features and at less than 3MB, I can't find another program with so many features and so easy to use. If you have used Paintshop Pro you will feel right at home with this. And yes, I have been able to convert a png and make a transparent color with it:

Use the eye dropper to select your color, call Color to Alpha, right-click on the big color button, choose Fore/Background color, click OK.

If Color to Alpha is grayed out, put the image in RGB Mode (Image > Mode > RGB) and try again.

For the record, I can't stand the Gimp, either.
