Im trying to build a 486 system for my brother, but I dont want to use a bunch of my good parts (that's why it's a 486)
heres what i come up with:
AMD 486 DX4-100
trident video card on VL-BUS
rockwell 56k modem(that thing is bigger than the motherboard!)
2 4.3 GB hard drives same speed(perfect for RAID) 1 seagate the other Western Digital
SONY CD-ROM(weird...uses a floppy drive cable.
A copy of Windows NT 3.51(He doesn't care)
and a ctx 15" moniter
but theres one problem but Ill get to that later

You must dislike your brother. Why would you even bother to assemble a 486? Shop around, you could find a more or less complete Pentium system for something like 15 bucks and it would be a hell of a lot more useful than that 486 dinosaur.

you could say that,

because this one , When I can get it running, I ran a benchmark on it and it passed the pentium 166mhz benchmark.(that is, once I use a special program i created...)

first of all I have one problem. THE MOTHERBOARD!
the only identifiers on it is a slogan That says GTC and the chipset says UMC. IT has 3 vl-buses and 4 isa buses and a amibios.do you know of a website for help on motherboards?

First of all, he has been using my 286 TANDY pc for a long time. I've got a bunch of useless junk parts that some works really well, but only for certain systems.why pay $15(well, I did get a pentium overdrive 266 mhz one time for about $3)when all these parts are free?
besides, AMD DOES make the better 486 cpu's

omfg... I remember they had those in my computer class in 7th grade. There was this awesome game called Round 42... it was so much fun. I'd so love to play that again

Well, I agree on that. I saw a computer once that had a DX5-133, it looked pretty quick (for a 486). What does he plan on doing with the computer? Even a DX4-100 would be awfully slow if he went online with it.

If you're trying to reconfigure the jumpers, look closely and see if the motherboard doesn't have tiny printed names for each of them. A lot of motherboards did.

I can't say that "GTC" rings a bell. UMC was a fairly common chipset used back in those days (along with SiS and Opti).

well, when I had it online last year, surprisingly, It's was faster than my AMD athlon 1.2 GHZ. I used a gigabit ethernet card on both Pc's. It's not like were trying to put half-life 2 on it or something.we've got 2 pc's gaming ready
