The Internet has killed video games

I was doing my daily read of Kotaku and Joystiq, and was wading through yet another flame war when I came to a conclusion:

The Internet has killed video games.

Ever since gaming started to receive 24/7 coverage, the amount of fanboyism has climbed to dramatic levels, far worse than the old "Super Nintendo is better than Genesis, vice versa" arguments of the school lunchrooms. The amount of melodramatic, doom sayer articles has increased 100 fold.

Case in point:

Stories on a Wii "software drought." Last time I checked, Wii was brand new. How many triple A titles can ANY system have in LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS of being on the market? I was forced to wait five months for Paper Mario? So what. I haven't even beaten Zelda yet. Or any Virtual Console games. PlayStation 2, even in its heyday, NEVER had one triple A title a month. You were lucky to get maybe three-five of those a YEAR. I remember the first year of PS2's life being pretty devoid of great games, but it still survived.

Speaking of PlayStation, how about the PS3 negativity? While I'm not a mega fan of Sony, the bad PS3 press is way over the top. It's gotten so bad, I can barely read the news anymore. Every story finds a way to attack the PlayStation 3, even if it's a story about another console. I get it. PS3 is too expensive. I get it. PS3 isn't so hot right now. Guess what? It's four months old. The Jaguar was on the market for a year without getting as much negative publicity, and that system was a dog.

I think the problem is the schedule of the Internet, i.e. there isn't one. News comes all day, every day. Never ceasing.

Guess what. There isn't enough gaming news to last a week, let alone a day. Back when you were younger, reading the magazines, did you really feel deprived because you were only getting news once a month? You were probably fine with it. You might even remember thinner issues from February to August, because there wasn't as much going on during that time frame. Now imagine stretching that news over the course of 24/7/365.

You can't, can you?

I hate to be the old man here, but fuck the gaming press. Things WERE better when I was younger. I could enjoy games more, before people would whine about utter nonsense. People are given the greatest games on earth, Gears of War, Halo, Twilight Princess, God of War, Guitar Hero, etc, and it's NEVER ENOUGH.

Do these people even like games? People call the GameCube a failure, yet when I look at my shelf, I see some of the greatest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Same with ALL of my systems. When did gaming become less about enjoying a good GAME, and more about who has the bigger dick?

It all just fucking sucks, and I'm sick to death of it. It doesn't matter if Xbox360, PS3, or Wii wins. It really really doesn't. The press seems to care, because it keeps the traffic coming to their sites. They try to divide gamers up at every turn. They try to create news where there isn't any. They build up and destroy anything they can, for the sake of the "news".

Well. Fuck. That.

Here's my answer to the whole thing: I turn to my reply when asked the age-old question; Which was better? Genesis or SNES?

Yes.

Be a videogamer to enjoy good games. Fuck the rest.

I have two things to say.

1: Agreed.
2: It's going to get worse before it gets better, if it ever gets better again that is.

The custom-designed SPC700 beats Sega's slapdash combo of the YM2151 and SN76489 any day of the week with more realistic instruments and better noise effects!

Me and another peep on IRC debated the merits of various consoles on and off over last year. I grew up with a SNES, he grew up with a Genesis. Hence, we brought that debate into the 21st century. It was fun.

One thing I've noticed is that gamers are really fucking annoying now. The gamers in my school when I was a kid used to be smart but socially inept. Now they're all just socially inept.

Ok, not that you all care, but here's my opinion:

1. The 360- It's a neat system with its flaws, but if the Japanese would get some friggin' sense, they'd see it this way too.
2. The PS3- It's not too bad, but I've seen vids on where the thing's used as a grill - and it actually cooked the friggin' steak too!
3. The Wii- Nintendo messed up on the name, but I still like this console. I kinda back up coolie when I say that the fanboys killed this system for me.

i agree with you.

i also think the problem is other places in addition to the internet.

my epiphany moment was driving down the street listening to National Public Radio while they were having some boring fucking interview with some game industry guy from EA and it was "stocks and bonds this, bazillion dollar industry that".

such a sad departure from its purer days. and yes, it makes me feel old.

I don't know it's more like this
1) Xbox360 good system compeared to the original Xbox, but the Japanese could careless so it's year lead has no advantige.

2) PS3 you'd think it was a good system but... isn't really better than Xbox360. This is where it gets it's problems. Price to high, dubious backwards compatablity(Europe has none), is actually competeing with PS2 and lossing, terrable PR, nolonger has any sort of year lead on it's competaters, only games people want seem to be FFXIII & MGS4, poor Japanese sales, but worst of all vitrialic Sony fanboy & constant downing of the system.

3) Wii not a bad system. It might not have the complete graphics capability of Xbox360 or PS3 but it's like 8x better than the PS2 everyone loves so much, depite GC & Xbox graphic being better. The Wii is doing well both here and Japan, but here where the problems start. Nintendo broke their launch releases promises. Why? everyone complained about graphics. Low number of games on horizon. Why? compainies didn't jump on bandwagon before the console gots sales, because of N64/GC history, so detracters will have to wait for bloody E3. Now for any fanboy who claims where are my Wii games, I'll tell them go play Baton Kaitos II and shut up. If they say "But I've played that", I say "Oh so your a Nintendo fan and owned a GC, you're use to the slow releases of N64/GC so shut up."

Seems so stupid to me current race looks more like this.
Japan
1) Wii... out in front because of cheap price, Japanese produced, all those GC games no one played, and DQSword. The disadvantage being developers out side of Sega & Konami seem to be waiting and seeing.

2) PS3... in second because of Japanese produced, Playstaition reputation, & MS4 and FFXIII. The disadvantage here being to pricey on both sides, no longer has a year lead, and actually loosing to the PS2.

3) Xbox360... in third because the disadvantages are out weighing the system at the moment, the not Japanese produced/lack of Japanese suport, but may over take PS3 if things keep up.

North America
1) Xbox360... in first because not Japanese produces isn't as much a problem in NA.
2) Wii
3) PS3

Why did I write all that it just proves that the internet whines about anything. Yes, Wii has enough games for both Nintendo fanboys and non-Nintendo fans. Yes the PS3 is suck more and more we get it.

I agree
when I think todays games in America I think G4 and IGN.
IGN was cool back in the day. I believe it all started out as www.n64.com then just got bigger after that.

wellll i wasn't around during the 80s so i wouldn't about the snes vs genesis thing, but i do remeber getting a snes and it was great, chrono trigger and the final fantasys, it was great. and my cousins had a sega i played sonic on it all the time.

And then later on was the n64 one of my favorites systems, and a friend had a playstation. chrono cross is on playstation a awesome game that isn't on nintedo unlike ct. but it doesn't matter.

your very true, every body forgets about the game and bashes the systems. would people still be getting mad and crapping their pants if all systems were in 32 or 16 bit? I don't know, but with the internet anything is possible.

so yes all systems have faults and greatness too them, so nobody get your panties in a knot

**UPDATE**

On a lark, I posted some of the above on a Joystiq thread about the "lack" of Wii games, and it was edited out by the admins.

Can't say I'm shocked, but it was still disappointing to see them censor anything that casts a negative light on the gaming "press."

It is just the internet to me. If there was another way people could all get together and talk about things it would be the same thing. Most people post things like that on blogs for more hits, a bunch of sensationalist bullshit. Everybody is a critic, or a Perez Hilton.

/back in the box.

Word. The newest system I have is the PS2 I borrowed from my brother, which I don't have a memory card for, or an RF modulator to hook it up to my TV with, and the only game I have for it is Nightmare of Druaga, a completely unknown game that I want nothing more to play, because it's like nothing I've ever seen before (except Monstania, but who's heard of that either?). Fuck popular games and systems, comsumerist idols!

Hah, but what about when the two collide? I just bought Curse of Dragon (the very Wonderboy...ey TG-16 game) for the Wii's Virtual Console.
