problem with bit torrent

So I am trying to get a torrent working on the girlfriends computer. The problem is that after a while an error pops up saying that the file she is trying to download is being used by another program, so cannot download. If she stops it and starts again, it works for a few minutes then does it again.

Any ideas?

Maybe a virus scanner is periodically accessing it?

It could be the client's way of saying that it doesn't have the proper write permissions.
