Powering devices via USB

If I have a device that normally requires two AA batteries, would it be possible to rig up something that connects to the battery slot so that the device instead draws power from a USB slot? I’m not talking about recharging the device or anything like that…it just needs to draw its power from USB instead of two AA batteries.

Create a voltage divider circuit out of two resistors to where 3V is dropped across one, and take the output off of it, leading into a parallel resistive branch to splice the total amperage to whatever level the hardware requires: The branch with the desired current is what you want piped into the device (Since voltage is the same across all branches of a parallel resistive circuit).

Won't there be some concern about how much current the device is requesting vs. how much current this arrangement will draw?

We aren't 100% sure how much current the device draws but if our math is correct, it should never need more than 60 mA. It definitely will not draw close to 100 mA. We are going to measure exactly how much current the device uses but I suspect that we are totally right.

Edit: Oh and as of right now, we intend on building a voltage divider circuit. We might use an http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062601&cp=&pg=1&y=9&origkw=voltage+regulator&kw=voltage+regulator&x=8&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=searchadjustable voltage regulator</a> but that might be overkill.

That's interesting. Just today I was thinking about how I could recharge my ancient http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/assets/geekstuff4u-mpio-1gb-mp3-15.jpgmp3 player</a> with batteries or wall outlet. It normally recharges through the headphone jack via the http://www.mp3spelers.nl/photos/inventory/188/product.jpgUSB port</a>. I could do all the math, but actually building something would probably take too much effort.
