Playing Breath of Fire II (SNES) for the first time...

...and damn, this may be the worst completed game translation I've ever seen. Professional my ass, every ROM hacker hosted on ZD could do a better job than Capcom did.

Gah! Crappy translation, slow gameplay, awkward scene transitions...

...I think I'm going to give up on this one. Games are supposed to be fun, not frustrating. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

It's also a very long and hard game. Aren't you going to stick around and get the demons?! Huh? What about Barubary? <img src=smilies/2gunsfiring_v1.gif>

I can understand why a person couldn't put up with it. It is still pretty fun, but my most recent play-through on the GBA version crapped out at the end of Hightower. Oh well.

Come on Space, you can do it!

Yeah, it is a hard one, and I was willing to give it credit for that (I've had a lot of close calls on the bosses), but it's the awkward interface that really frustrates me. I've only just started, but I've already gotten stuck multiple times trying to figure out exactly how the game wanted me to proceed. Usually it was something ridiculous like I missed talking to someone in town or wasn't pushing the right button with the right character in the right spot. The awkward translation isn't making it any easier to work these things out.

I think I'll move on to Dragon Quest VI, since I want to play it before moving on to VII. I just found a copy of Dragon Warrior VII for the PSX in a small shop here in Seattle (my temporary home), so I'm looking forward to getting into that.
 
yeah, it was pretty bad. I liked the dragon system in BOF2 the least of all the BOF games(excluding Dragon Quarter, since I haven't played it).

Ha, good luck with Dragon Warrior VII. It's very long and not exactly a "good" rpg.

Damn right. I recently replayed FF5 on ZSNES and I like that translation better than the PSX's. Not to mention faster gameplay.

Megaman X6 is similar. Leaving in the Japanese voices was probably a good thing, but the terrible translation certainly wasn't. Do you wish to 'overwright' your saved game or not? That's just the start of it...
 
Wha... yah as much as a like Breath of Fire 2, I have to say that trasilation is god awful. The worst part of it was Capcom just inserted that crap transilation into the GBA version when they said they were transilation it. What were they thinking? Either way though the bad transilation never impedded my game play or continuation of playing it like many other. The only time the crap transilation got in the way for me was that stupid button combination temple that used the colour coded words refering to the original standard colours of the buttons on the Super Famicon's controler when the Super Nintendo had only a row of lavender and a row of violet buttons as it standard colours, and here I am trying to figure out which buttons are the yellow and green ones.
Does Capcom not spell check their game scripts or something? because most of their games have botched transilation problems which effect english undertanding of the story lines.

That wouldn't have been a problem at all if Nintendo of America had just stuck to the original Super Famicom design. I mean, what were they on? They ended up changing this:

Fortunately, when it came down to the PAL regions, whoever made the decision obviously wasn't on any kind of mind-altering drugs as we got the Super Famicom design modified to say 'Super Nintendo' on it instead. I didn't even know there was any other design for the system until I got onto the internet and saw it for myself!

It was my thought that the Japanese division did the translation for Megaman X6, and no one at the American side thought to proof read it for mistakes. To call the translation minimalist would be a serious understatement. The Japanese voices are still there and the Japanese names for the bosses are fully intact too. "Rainy Turtloid"? "Blaze Heatnix"? "Ground Scaravich"? "Infinity Mijinion"? Would it have been that hard to make them into understandable English?

P.S. People in flat mode probably aren't going to like this post. If you are one of these people, please join those of us happily using threaded mode.

I hope that the rumoured MMX collection does get released, and that they fix the problems.

But then again, this is fucking Capcom we're talking about, they'll just change a few graphics and be done with it.
