PC/Monitor Disposal?

I cleaned out one of my closets today and came across my old busted PC monitors and some old PCs. I was just wondering how I should dispose of them? I hear you can't just toss them in the garbage, unfortunately. Instead I hear you have to actually pay money and ship the damn things somewhere. Is this true, or can I just go ahead and trash 'em?

Also, there is one thing that seems like it could still be of use to someone. Quite an antique, an IBM Personal System/2 Model 55SX. Last time I tried booting it up I got a weird error message, but it does at least turn on! What should I do with it?

Either sell them on ebay for something or call your local city hall and ask if there is a recycler near you.

Actually, you can just toss them in the garbage. As far as I know, the recycling of monitors and stuff is up to you, sorta like recycling cans. I know I've never had problems tossing old pcs and monitors in the trash, just like anything else.

Does it help the environment? No, but I can't be bothered to take that extra step to make it so that it will.

WTF, that's just irresponsible. There's mercury and shit in those boards. And if you get caught it is a felony to just throw that kind of stuff away. How hard is it to just sell that junk for $5 on ebay?

He is right. It is a felony. Not only the mercury but the lead and about 50 other rare and deadly substances that are in the components of the older ones in much smaller levels. I have heard of places that charge up to $25 for a full computer. I myself would sell them for $1 on ebay plus shipping for the entire lot just to get out of the dump charges.

i trashed one of my older computers when i got my mac pro... in our town i think all you have to do is call to schedule a pickup so it can be disposed of properly.
