I honestly don't see the point, I've used it and it is the same as Internet Explorer to me (Maybe it's because I don't have any issues with Internet Explorer, I never get spyware or anything like that). We have it at school now and I'm glad, the morons there can't help but download bullshit games that are nothing but a vessel for spyware, but I'd never use it at home.

It's so much better than IE though. It supports HTML standards, not that proprietary crap that MS has thrown is, it's open source, it's smaller, faster, supports extensions like ad blocking, user agent switching, has tabbed browsing, none of IE's security holes and has skinning support.

Oh, and you don't support a crappy company like Microsoft in the process.

I'm sorta regretting even upgrading from 0.9. Many of my favorite extensions are now useless. <img src=smilies/cry.gif>

Oh well, I'm sure they'll be updated eventually.

I know the feeling. Sort Bookmarks was a great plugin. I can manually sort my Bookmark Toolbar, but that's not cool and I don't feel like right clicking every folder and hitting Sort Bookmarks. As far as being updated... don't hold your breath I'm afraid. Even really nice extensions haven't been updated. Thankfully, Gmail Notifier is still around!

This is what I've done, and I'll say yes. 1.0PR was rather unstable for me, but 1.0 seems to be faring better. Despite the lack of a couple of extensions and my old Noia eXtreme theme...

But doesn't IE also support the standards? From what I've seen pages always look either the same or better with IE.

it's open source

I could care less.

it's faster

From my experience it's slower, at least on a PoS PC.

supports extensions like ad blocking, user agent switching, has tabbed browsing

Except for ad blocking those features don't interest me, and I already have IE blocking ads <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

none of IE's security holes

Probably has its own security holes...

and has skinning support

That's a good feature, it's not enough to make me change browsers though.

Oh, and you don't support a crappy company like Microsoft in the process.

Bah, I don't hate Microsoft, I don't ignore the fact they put out a good product.

If a page looks better in IE than in a fully standards-compliant browser, it's obviously because the page author, rather than making sure that the page is rendered ok in all browsers, used proprietary elements promoted by MS.

It isn't the other browser's fault for not displaying that stuff; it's the page author's fault for using non-standard HTML, and Microsoft's fault for promoting its use (possibly with the intention, at least in part, of making pages be displayed badly in other browsers)

Well browsers do to some extent. The difference is, Firefox tries to get the standards right.. whereas IE sort of likes to make up its own way of doing things (which is why some poorly designed webpages are "IE only"). Not to mention IE's PNG support is laughable.

> From what I've seen pages always look either the same or better with IE.

I find it to be just the opposite. I wish there was still that post by Mushroom Blue a long time ago that had that list of sites that IE just horribly botched.

> I could care less.

I believe the phrase you're looking for is "I couldn't care less" </pet peeve>. ;P

> Except for ad blocking those features don't interest me, and

If you're on a PoS PC, you would be interested in several of the other extensions for Firefox (like the google bar, flash blocker). But the point he was making is that Firefox is far more customizable.

> Probably has its own security holes...

When they're discovered, an update is made available almost immediately (whereas with IE, they don't really bother until the next update, which could leave you vulnerable for months)... but that aside... Firefox is more secure than IE.

> That's a good feature, it's not enough to make me change
> browsers though.

Well from what it sounds like you just don't want to switch. There are plenty of reasons to... but if none are going to be enough to make you switch you're obviously aren't going to.

The question is.... what reasons do you have for using IE over Firefox (aside from it just being what you've always used)? If you can come up with a single good reason why you should stick with IE other than "It's what I'm used to" or something of the sort, I'll be very impressed... because really, there's no real reason to actually choose IE... Firefox is just all around superior.

> Bah, I don't hate Microsoft, I don't ignore the fact they

I'd agree that some of MS's good products get dismissed unfairly just because they're made by MS... but IE isn't one of those programs. IE is decent in that it gets the job done.... but Firefox, Opera, and even Mozilla do the same job, but do it much better.

You've never written any sort of complex web-design. With some more advanced techniques, it's hard to get Firefox to comply, let alone IE. In terms of standards-compliance and correct rendering technique, IE is to Firefox as Netscape 4.x is to IE.

Hooray! It's...exactly like 1.0pr...? I really can't see what's different. My extensions are kinda buggered, but that was to be expected. I was hoping it would at least make the TabBrowser extension not choke on target=_blank links. No luck. Oh well. A painless (and possibly pointless) update.

I can tell the difference. My problem with 1.0PR was plugins.

Macromedia Shockwave: Refused to automatically install. Manual installation fixed it.

Macromedia Flash: Refused to automatically install. Refused to manually install. A few days later, I tried again, and manual installation worked. No idea why.

Apple Quicktime: Refused to be seen by Firefox 1.0PR as a plugin. Period. Manual install made no difference, and the problem didn't fix itself.

Now, with the final 1.0, the first worked on automatic installation, and the third failed on automatic, but worked on manual. Allowing me to watch http://poipoi.clan582.net/?foo=1Arnie in Japan</a>...

Once I've tried installing Macromedia Shockwave, I'll know if everything is working OK. After this, my list is down to:

Noia eXtreme (theme)
Firesomething (extension)
Allow Right-Click (extension, I don't like webpages telling me where I can and can't right-click)
Tabbrowser Extensions (an extension I've been missing since I upgraded to 1.0PR...)

Edit: Yep, Shockwave works now. That's all of my plugins done. All that's left is on the list above. Once I have everything, I don't plan to move from this version for a while (barring minor updates, like maybe a 1.01 release).

Dammit, why don't we get any commercials like that?

Downloading subbed anime now is convenient and all, but in the old taped subbings you sometimes got to see some of those hillariously insane commercials.
