Message Board Software

What's your favorite kind of message board software? I've been thinking of installing a small message board on my homepage for friends, coworkers, and whoever else wanders by. The only requirement that I can think of at the moment is that it must have threaded mode. Flat mode is the devil.

Invision Power Board 2.0 has threaded mode, but you'll have to find somewhere else to download it other than the official site, since the full-featured trial for it is no longer offered.

the last time i was considering setting up board software i first installed phpBB. It was alright, but frankly it just seemed too big and cumbersome. But then my good friend here, http://zero-soul.panicus.org/main.phpVystrix Nexoth (a.k.a. zero soul) wrote his own board software which i enjoyed much better.

check out a test board here

Slash is probably the best message board software out there. It's highly customizable and fast.

You've never installed this, have you?

1) You need to be able to install CPAN modules.
2) Your apache server MUST be set up a SPECIFIC way, along with mod_perl. ( The documentation actually recommends removing any existing versions of perl and apache before installing slash, and recompiling them as per the instructions )
3) It assumes it can write EVERYWHERE on the server.

Actually, I have implemented Slash for intranet use in no less than two mid-size corporate environments.

I never attested to it's ease of installation, however, I find the site you referenced quite humorous. If it took that guy two and a half weeks to get through with it, he was obviously doing a lot wrong. Help is there, all he needed to do was ask the Slashcode team and/or visit their forums..

From original post:
"I've been thinking of installing a small message board on my homepage for friends"

I've installed Slash myself a couple of times, and would recommend Scoop long before slash, when looking for a simple solution. Either way, phpbb seems to be the correct answer to the op.

Thanks, I like this a lot. It's nice-looking, simple, and easily cusomizable. I think I'll use it as is for now, and if things get busy, I can just add features myself (like flat mode).
