I'd been on the ground in El Salvador for less than 20 minutes when we got the news. By 8:30 p.m., we had arrived from Los Angeles, picked up our bags and were headed to the hotel when our fixer got a call saying there was a shooting in the middle of town. As we were about to head to the hotel, our fixer got another call – another MS-related shooting a few blocks away. We stayed a couple more hours to learn more information. Then a red-truck carrying the forensic investigators pulled up to the scene. In the back was a black trash bag with two legs sticking out of the bag. There were four MS homicides the night of our arrival. It set the tone for the rest of our trip.

The word "mara" means gang in "Caliche", Salvadoran slang, and is taken from "marabunta", the name of a local type of ant known for its fierce behavior and defense of the colony.
In addition, "mara" also means fear in Spanish, "Mara Salvatrucha" would then become "Fear the Salvadorian gangs".
The 13 symbolizes the 13 rules which they must follow, and 'M' for "Mara" (fear), is also the 13th letter in the alphabet.
A few months ago, Adnan El-Shukrijumah was sighted in Honduras in a meeting with the "Warlords" of MS-13, the al Qaeda lieutenant was later observed in northern Mexico, again in a meeting with MS-13 representatives. - "He is looking for ways to infiltrate USA via the border to Mexico, and he will pay any price to accomplish that goal", said Erick Stakelbeck, senior writer and analyst at the Investigative Project, a leading counterterrorism think tank in Washington, D.C.
Seeing as they span over 33 states in the USA, and I'm not sure how many forumers live there, are there anyone here who live in areas where they operate, or know anything from real experience?
