IE6 problems

IE6 is not displaying graphics properly. I think that botched windows update from a few weeks ago is screwing things up...and it won't display PNG correctly with the alpha channel.

Um. WTF. This is causing me grief at work.

"Versions of Internet Explorer up to 6 do not support native alpha-channel transparency."

I've been using the new Opera browser lately. It isn't affected by most exploits IE6 is vulnerable to and it does support pngs with alpha channels also *just checked at the opera homepage*. I like IE but I kept getting viruses and trojans even with firewall and antivirus running so I just switched.

PNG support can only exist by some black magic tricks whose details i know not, I think it involved rendering the thing through directdraw or something. I guess google can help moreso than I at this.

No, that's normal. PNG transparency RARELY WORKS on IE. It's why I stopped using that piece of shit. Not the spyware, not the constant patching. Just the fact that they haven't fucking fixed transparencies in over four years.

PNG was developed by open-source communists who are eroding our IT industry. Also, I've patented IF-THEN-ELSE statement, so all of you should stop using it right now.

Yeah, simple transparent pixels work, but alpha channel images do not (translucency)... at least not without the directdraw hack mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

Supposedly, IE7 will support them from what I've read, but I haven't tried it. I moved to Opera a while ago.

I can confirm that it does. Performance isn't too shabby, either.

...couple things.

Should have mentioned this.

1) I wasn't talking about me...I was talking about 99% of the website visitors using ie6 so I can't get them to change to firefox or opera.

2) IE7 works fine...the missing graphics are there and alpha channel in PNG works.

Stupid ie6...it's REALLY pissing me off <img src=smilies/angryfire.gif>

Good to hear IE7 works, but it doesn't explain why IE6 hasn't fixed alpha transparency. And yes, it sucks because of the whole customer thing. You shouldn't =have= to fix stuff because 90+% of your visitors use a broken browser. :(

you can't control what people do. so if you want people to like your website, then you have to cater to them. and putting a banner on your website saying "firefox rules download it now" just looks stupid.

Do better, just make the site not work in IE. Replace it with a 'use a real browser' page or something.

That's fine if it's just a personal site or something and you don't care who visits. If you intend to mak any money at all from it, or you want large numbers of people to se it, that's a stupid idea.

I meant that Microsoft should fix the fucking bug. I'm NOT saying he should force others to change their browser. Sure, Firefox is cool, but it's not for everyone.

That's not how the real world works.

Re: ...couple things.

Tried it. The conditional java comment with style in the img tag, a span covering the img tag, the transform style in the img itself....nothing worked.
