Maybe because it sucks? Where should I start? The corrupt government? The weather? The poor educational ranking? The pollution? The Saints? The job market?

I could carry on an actual debate here, but seeing how you're only here to troll, I'll resort to "your mother is good in the sack," and "your feet stink," and stop there.

Well, it wouldn't do much good at this point, considering that I won't have a solid internet connection for months.
But honestly, the opinion of someone who comes and goes, having to create new accounts, (probably due to being banned) doesn't really matter to me.

I wonder how many people are volunteering to help bring this site back.. Honestly, I would, if I had the time, and trust of the staff here. That and the know-how. I'm no hacker/programmer, so I wouldn't be able to contribute much.

What we need is a fresh design and decent CMS system. So far everyone who has "volunteered" has failed to produce anything even close to a product fit for testing and evaluation.

I keep my options open...I'll entertain anything so long as it's not vaporware, which, unfortunately, is 95% of what we've heard. Other 5% are bad, non-functional, amateur looking designs with no CMS system.

I wish Wordpress had a CMS plugin to handle a ton of files...I'd put that online tomorrow if it did. Then it'd be easy to add people to contribute.

CMS = Content Management System, right? Would it matter what form the CMS took (for instance, could it be PHP?). You want to keep all the current archives, be able to easily manage new content, and have it look pretty. Are those the only requirements, or is there another roadblock I'm not aware of?

So, I guess that means the olate thing fell through too...? Too bad. It actually looked kind of promising, but then history does have quite a tendency to repeat itself.

While it may seem that I've gone the way of every other "volunteer," I'm still around. My problem, though, is that I've been thinking and brainstorming and simply can't come up with a good design that would be worthy of everything ZD is (was?).

I was talking to my brother about it, though (XiP), and we agreed that the problem with ZD is that it tried to be too big. If redesigned, I'd like to propose that it be a site with many sub-domains.

For instance, instead of http://www.zophar.net being the massive hub for everything, there should be translations.zophar.net, hacking.zophar.net, utilities.zophar.net, emulators.zophar.net, music.zophar.net, or something of the sort. That way, we could have people who are interested in one area of emulation specifically working on that section. Because they'd only be doing news and contributing in an area that they're interested in, they wouldn't get burnt out. Then, the main zophar.net page could have general emulation news, perhaps, and link to all the rest. I guess it'd end up being similar to slashdot, where you have your main site, but then each individual subdomain specializes in specifically that topic.

I think that if we did this, we'd find that it's a lot easier to run the site, it'd be more lively, and then instead of being average in every area, each section could excel in its one area, thus making the entire site excel in every area.

Doing something like this would require a flexible design in which everything can be done with css, and it'd probably be a large undertaking to get it up and running, but the key here is to do things one step at a time. First design the main page, then clean up the code, then put as many things into css as possible so as to make it cross-browser compatible, then worry about the CMS.

Again, this is only what I've been thinking. Maybe I'm dreaming too big, but I really think it can happen. Maybe I'll try to seriously start thinking of a design after finals this week, but until then I'll monitor the forums now and again.

So are you thinking of breaking it up a la Slashdot, where the site is broken down into smaller sections and the 'main site' is where some (but not all) articles appear? Sounds like a good idea.

It would also be great if the user could customize what they want their front page to look like. If I don't want to see Music or Rom Hacking news, I could choose to never see it.

Indeed, I really feel that splitting the site up will help keep it from befalling the same fate as did our current ZD. But all of this will probably require a custom portal system, which will either mean that we need to find the right people or I need to sit down and learn more PHP than I already know. But I figure if Romhacking.net did it, Zophar can do it, too. And unfortunately as I've stated before, Zophar's Domain is the only site that was once big enough and thusly has enough nostalgia and memories to become a big emulation hub. Any new site would have to start from scratch, but this site has that advantage.

That is kind of what I'm waiting for...I don't have the technical knowhow to redesign the site, but I have enough downtime at work that if/when such a system was in place, I would be more than happy to work within the system and get things updated, entered in, or whatever.

I say give it a shot. You have nothing to lose.

Hey, why not do the news system digg style with user added content?
