I agree with you that differences are differences, and I know that there are significant differences between the dialects, but the language is still called Portuguese and the proper way to distinguish between the two is to say "European Portuguese" and "Brazilian Portuguese".
We don't have a language called Mexican (contrary to what the Conmander in Cheat may think) just because the dialect of Spanish spoken in Mexico is very different from that which is spoken in Spain.

I agree with you that differences are differences, and I know that there are significant differences between the dialects, but the language is still called Portuguese and the proper way to distinguish between the two is to say "European Portuguese" and "Brazilian Portuguese".

Maybe so, but let's put this into a different perspective. While we don't have a language called "American" despite having many differences in both spelling and pronounciation from the English dialect spoken in, say, the United Kingdom, typically people call both dialects "English" unless you're a fucking bleeding-heart PC type, or unless you're a language selector in Linux.

This is semantic crap. Why don't you do something constructive for a change - go to the source and tell devilfox not to submit translations as Brazilian, but rather Brazilian Portugese. Tell him you're unhappy. Tell him how his months of hard work were undermined completely by his STUPID STUPID inability to work out exactly what dialect he speaks. Tell him that the better-knowing Brazilian Portugese speakers of the world deserve, nay demand better. Godammit, their lives are difficult enogh as it is, between being robbed by street urchins and chased by monkeys, without such hideous, glaring, unforgiveable misnomers as this.

Oh, so there WAS a new section. Yeah, Brazilian Portuguese and normal Portuguese are both under the Portuguese section. Honestly, most Portuguese translations are from people in Brazil. I don't hear too terribly much about people in Portugal making translations, but from my understanding Portuguese and Brazilians can understand one another.

im pretty sure any portuguese translation i ever added was brazilian portuguese, but it doesnt matter very much anyways

I call what we speak here as american and not english...mainly just because we've butchered the english language by adding laziness and the like. Also, some words like Colour and Armour are spelled differently. Therefore shouldn't it be considered as american?

Yes, if only out of principle. The request is reasonable enough, but it was originally made in such an arsehole-ish fashion it'd be sad to see it honoured. Having said that, combining the two would probably serve the greater good, so best just going ahead. But if you wanted to ban that bloody troll while you're at it, though, that would be peachy.

I like to put it this way: We took the language, dropped the parts that didn't make any sense, added our own parts that didn't make sense, and called it the same thing <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>
Speaking of calling it "American," I am brought back to an early moment on one of the original TEK boards where this guy started in on Tony because he said he was an American. Apparently, the guy thought he should call himself a United States citizen, not an American, for who-knows-why. It resulted in the guy running away from the board crying and Tony referring to himself as a "USer" for a while, which I thought was pretty funny.
