Gaim 2.0 beta 1 --- half-cooked?

Just installed the Windows ver. of Gaim 2.0 beta 1. Is it me, or does this feel really wrong?

They took out all the important options, most importantly, THE ONES THAT CONTROL THE BUDDY LIST! Arrgghh.

Also, the new status bars are totally bunk. Number one, they're too damn big, and two, the don't expand when you want to choose a saved away message. It opens a new window, which makes no UI sense.

You might want to check out the program if you'd like to check out the progress of Gaim, but be forewarned---it needs big work.

I could never stand GAIM for one major reason: the interface wasn't nice looking enough that I wanted it on my desktop all the time. Any software that sits on my desktop all the time has to look good, or I'll get sick of looking at it and uninstall it. Trillian's Enhanced Contact List tops everything else I've seen (except OS X's Adium, but everything on OS X looks good). I gave the new GAIM a shot and I'm hardly impressed. It still looks like it was designed by engineers, not HCI experts. Some of the options seem to have gone missing, as you said.

I can't understand why my "buddy signs on" and "buddy signs off" sounds aren't working. They won't even 'test' in the file browser, even though they work just fine in Gaim 1.x.x

For that matter, when I loaded it up this last time, it gave me an error about not being able to initialize the gaim update library.

so, are there any new features at all, or is it all just one large step back?

Whereas I simply don't want the buddy list on my desktop all the time anyway, any program I use goes in the system tray or the task bar when I'm not directly interacting with it. Thus Winamp (default classic skin) and Gaim.

> I actually use iTunes for my MP3s now

I must confess to using iTunes as well, but only for managing the songs on my iPod. I'd rather not work with some third party program that might mess things up.

responding to user feedback ftw. All software developers should do this (I'm looking at you Microsoft!).
