Final Fantasy VII

I've had this game since 1998. Never beat it. I'm thinking about doing so now. Is it:

A) Worth it?

B) Going to take a million hours to gain experience?

C) Fun, considering the many strides they've taken in gaming the last ten years?

Parts of me finally want to take this game on, but does it really need all the time I think it's going to take to beat it? What's a realistic amount I'll need? 40 hours? More/less? Tell me your thoughts on FFVII, and why I should/shouldn't try to beat it. I loved FFVI and FFVIII, and hated FFX, if that's any help.

it seems forever with all the minigames.
I need to take a week vacation and play this game.

No. You can literally hold circle and win everything unless you are going to take on Ruby or Emerald. In which case you'll actually need to think. Otherwise, you can sleep through the game.

My absolute fastest time was about 35 hours, so I'd say between 45-50 if you are going to be "careful." Though the true speed demons could probably do it in 25 hours.

Truth be told, FF7 is great because of how much fun you can have outside of the actual storyline. If you can put aside the changes in quality for CG's, the shit translation, and the bugs (there's a couple crash bugs, but unless you know about them you most likely won't encounter them) and the (lack of) difficulty, then I'd say FF7 can be be called one of the better games of the generation. Not nearly the best, but still pretty good.

If you like RPGs, then yeah, I'd say it's one of the better time investments you could make.

Like it's already been said, no. You might check out a sweet spot or two that can give you fast leveling up, but you can get away with doing none of that. Beware, though, that in the end, the game and its system begs you to do some massive leveling up to max out your magic. You may be afraid of being tempted, or you may be afraid of being annoyed by it, but if you don't want to do extra leveling at all, you better expect to encounter it.

I played it recently, and I have to say yes. If you can appreciate the care and creativity that went into NES and SNES games, then you should be able to recognize the same merit in this game.

All that said, I was kind of disappointed with FF7. I had played it all the way through before, but this last time I actually didn't beat it. I really think that the story starts declining after the first 10 hours and never recovers. By the end, it loses all the cool attitude it had in the beginning, and that's all I really liked about FF7 in the first place.

You should assume it will take 50 for your first time.

That was actually one of the main reasons I decided to give the game a second look ;)

Exactly. Actually, if I play really fast and perfect, I can beat the game in under 11 hours game time.

I've had Final Fantasy VII for a long time too (I also have Final Fantasy VI, VIII, XI, and X) and really should have another go at it. I've tried it three times, but never got past the first disc. I even http://pointlessness.freehostia.com/2006/october/ff7.phpgave it hell</a> once. Maybe I'll think differently if I complete it though. I didn't like Spirited Away that much until I saw it for the fourth time...

I just beat this game for the second time last year (first time in prolly eight years or so), and I must say, I really enjoyed it. I usually don't like RPGs, but this one tends to stand out for me (along with FFV and some others).

i just may do the same. i'm so behind the times on so many, now classics. like the breath of fire PS series.

i like it that way though because i know if the game industry ends tomorrow, i'm still set for life at the pace i'm keeping. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

Actually, I've just gotten my PlayStation CDs back out now, and some curious trends are emerging.

Final Fantasy VI: Not in too bad of a state, might have a go with it.
Final Fantasy XI: Some scratches, but works OK.
Ridge Racer Type 4: Disc is in pretty bad shape, probably not much left it it.
Resident Evil 3: Will not boot, too much damage.
Final Fantasy VII: Abandon all hope ye who insert disc here.
Final Fantasy VIII: Mint condition.

Bear in mind that all of the Final Fantasy games listed are second-hand games too. I don't think even Hironobu Sakaguchi could love FF8...

DEFINITELY...I've beat this game over a dozen times. It had gotten to the point that after beating and doing everything including both Ultimate Weapons, I took to beating the weapons without KOTR/W-Summon/Mime, and fighting them physically only, and playing the entire game without materia, or sticking with the origional party. I know...I'm a sick individual that had waaaaay too much time on my hands. The last time I beat it however, was in 2001.

Not if you're just interested in beating the game. I've done a run through without extras in about 43 hours.

Insanely...if you take 40 or 140 hours, it'll keep bringing you back for more...the replay value is never ending, and is always entertaining.

What makes this game better than X is the fact that you are pretty much free to do what you want when you want after you leave Midgar. In X, you were pretty much constrained to what you could do or where you could go until the very end, and even then, there really wasn't much point to it, unless you're mini-game/quest happy. (Capturing 10 of every monster, dodging 200 lightning bolts, getting every ultimate weapon pimped out and defeating all the Arena monsters...yeah, it was a pain in the ass, but I did it, b/c I'm insane like that).

VII is a much darker and "adult" oriented in content. X was directed more to the lower teen audience b/c it was the first on the new platform and was to be more wide reaching. VII was as well, but has much more detailed of a plot and sub-plot structure.

IMHO, definietly worth your time, and if you're a FF fan, a MUST!

I'm in this boat, though it isn't because I didn't like the game. I just got distracted by something else, probably a Castlevania game. :p I then never got back into it...I wasn't that far in, I think that it was just after you 'meet' Sephy for the first time, really. On the boat.

I gotta play it, it's one of those games I've always felt I needed to play.

You know I'm kind of like both of you except, I was saved before the temple of ancients and Aeris' death so I could level some crap up before she went bye-bye. But really it wasn't the problem of not liking it or anything, it had more to do with the I had the PC version and for some reason I get drawn away from PC-gaming far more than other types. I definatly would have finished it if I had the console version.

It doesn't help too much when the PC version had crash bugs.

Well I only ever crashed for me if I hadn't restarted. My computer is/was in line with the intended moddels for the game. As such I never expeiranced the Cosmo Canyon bug, the Chocobo Racing bug, or the Battle Swirl bug just to name a few.
