FF8: PSX or PC?

Well I used to intensively dislike this game, but I'm going to give it another shot. My question is this, does the game looks better running on ePSXe, or would the PC version be better?

Also, are there any knowned problem with either version?

Thanks.

Well, if you're gonna use the computer either way, i say go with the PC version. Should run better than under ePSXe.

Thanks...one thing in favor of the PSx version, though, is that it doesnt take nearly as much space. About 650-700mb per CD, one CD at a time....versus around 2gb+ for the PC. I keep running out of space. Oh well, I'll just use the one I can get first.

But assuming he has a decent enough computer, wouldn't the PSX version look better with the right video settings?

No, because compared to a real playstation, the PCs graphics are better, so the best ePSXe graphics settings won't look as good as the PC version.

I think it's also from a music standpoint. If I recall, FF8 PC uses MIDI (I used to own it, but I hated FF8 so I gave it away years ago) while the PS game uses Redbook Audio, right?

That made no sense...ePSXe makes games look much better than on the real PSX. So even if the PC looks better than the real PSX, ePSXe might be even better. Unless I misunderstood your statement.

Thanks for the answers, I'm still undecided though. Gah! I'll look for a PC demo and see what it looks like.

really? I've never seen ePSXe put out something better looking than the real thing. Maybe similar, but certainly not better. I guess i need to experiment with different plugins or something.

This is a guess from someone who knows nothing about the game, but I know that the N64 was crippled by a small texture cache which forced the use of low-quality textures. No matter how good the emulating system is you can't improve this (short of using the 2D image enhancement filters on the textures themselves, but even then you can't invent data). If there was a PC version of the same game, though, it might have higher resolution textures for the more flexible PC graphics system.

what does the N64 have to do with this?

He's just showing an example of how an emulator wont look better than the real thing, or something like that.

Yeah, emus will never look like the REAL thing. There will always be some 'little' flaws.

Wrong.

Honestly dude, a little common courtesy wouldn't go amiss. I wouldn't speak to anyone on the internet any differently than I would to their face. And if you're prepared to speak to blameless strangers (however mistaken) like that in person, as you so often do here, well shame on you.

Well I still believe what I said and also agree with what thegodofhellfire said.

No offense, but emulators *do* make the games look *much* better than the real games. Either you have not done it yet, or you used the wrong plugings/wrong configurations.

ePSXe +
Pete'S OGL 1.75 GPU (latest as of now) +
Eternal SPU +
scph1001 BIOS .

Turn on 2xSaI, Bilinear filtering (the first one looks best), Alpha Multi Pass, Advanced Blending, put all that in 1024x768 (or higher), turn on Anti-aliasing in your control panel (not from the emu), and you'll never go back to your real PSX.

Yes, in certain games there are flaws, mostly minor but it happens. Those flaws usually show on pre-rendered backgrounds. Some say that using a multiple of the PSX's innate resolution (320x240) does the trick - I havent tried yet.

As for 3D graphics...well, you have to see to believe. A 3D-only game = very nice.

In any case, the only reason I can see for using the real PSX is that its more comfortable than being on a computer chair, and you're not tempted to cheat (save-states or GS codes). And of course, you need a PC gamepad or you're stuck using your keyboard (which works well, but isnt comfortable)
