DVD Software recommendation

I want to take the audio/video off an existing DVD and burn a new DVD with portions of it removed... while adding chapter points and stuff. Basically -- I have a DVD of recorded shows, and I want to insert chapter points between each episode and clip out the commercials.

I have borderline zero experience with this stuff -- so I'm asking for recommendations on what programs I can use to accomplish this. I don't need anything super fancy.

My computer is pretty old -- P3 1GHz, 512 MB RAM, 64MB ATI Radeon 7200 series AGP, running Win2k SP4. I don't mind dealing with slow computing -- as long as the process is possible and the final product is not affected.

I don't have a lot of money to blow on software -- so if something works and is free, I'll take it over something that has bells and wistles but costs more.

So.... what programs do I need to do what I want to do?

If you have access to a Mac, use iMove and iDVD. Together they're the tool I've seen for doing basic DVD editing.

Barring that, Adobe Premiere is good, but you may not have access to that either. There's a program inclused with the Nero Ultra suite called Nero Vision, I believe that will do simple DVD editing. Maybe that will work for you?

Also, if you don't want to buy _anything_, you could always use http://lives.sourceforge.net/LiVES</a>.

No Mac. Just Win2k

After you mentioned that, I realized I had some Nero stuff that came with my DVD burner which I didn't install -- Nero Vision Express 3 was one of them. I installed it and checked it out and it looks like it might fit the bill, but it only wants to work with video files already on my computer, and I didn't see any option to rip the files off the DVD

So I guess the next question is what can I do to get the video off the DVD? <s>I was looking at LiVES for this and the feature list on the page suggests I can do it, so I'll have to check it out.</s>

EDIT -- er... scratch LiVES. Apparently you can only download the windows version through bittorrent, which ain't gonna happen on my connection (Satellite is ass). Alternative suggestions?

Lastly, how much quality degredation am I looking at in this process? I'd imagine ripping + editing + re-encoding + burning will cause some additional loss... how bad will it be?

Thanks a bunch

Changing Gears....

Alternative theory

Commercial DVDs have some form of copy protection, I'm sure. But would there be anything stopping me from, say, making an ISO of a commercial DVD, then burning it to a new DVD?

DVDs are encrypted with CSS (content scrambling system)

Go to http://www.afterdawn.com/Afterdawn</a> and grab DVD Decrypter. Actually, if you wish, you *could* use it to make an unencrypted ISO which you could then copy to another DVD. I don't think you can just make an ISO then copy it directly without decrypting it though....even if you could you'd probably need dual layer discs to record on to, and those things can be expensive.
