Why is it that EVERY cd-r, dvd-r, cd, dvd, etc drive SUCKS? EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

Now this stupid dvd-r drive just disappears from windows...completely gone at random times.

Do you think we could make a freaking optical drive that fails for an optical reason?

Agree 100%. Every single optical drive I've ever puchased with exception of the first ones to come out that were 1x and 2x has either gone out or randomly decided to work...then not...then work...then not.

This DVD writer I have now has some kind of stupid problem, if I leave a disc in it and reboot my machine or turn the machine on it hangs the windows loading screen...eject the disc and the windows splash screen appears.

Optical drive manufacturers listen up: ITS ALMOST 2000-FUCKING-7 MAKE A DAMN DRIVE THAT WORKS FOR MORE THAN A YEAR.

Oh and optical mice are another thing that goes out on me often. Note: not talking about LASER mice.

I've got an unbranded DVD drive from my second PC here that worked consistently for six years, and an AOpen DVD rewriter that has worked without flaw for over a year now.

My only drive oddity was a new 250GB hard drive that seemed to vanish once. Windows could see the drive, but insisted that it was unformatted. Not good after I'd just moved over 50GB of data to it. The drive came back after I rebooted though, and has given me no problems since.

I have a CD burner that the drive only opens like 1 out of every 15 presses of the eject button.

Piece of shit.

My CDRW drive will not eject unless a disc is in it. If i forget to put a blank back in I must use a paperclip to open it.

The only issue I've ever had was when I removed my DVD burner from my old machine to my new one and it triggered the Windows Product Activation thing.

a little while back, trying to open my dvd burner via my computer would spawn a relatively vague "Illegal operation" dialog.

but it doesn't now, possibly because i bought a nintendo wii.

It depends on the drive itself.

I've bought several drives, and they work fine with DVDs. But CDs? The damn thing vibrates so much it makes my server case jitter enough to move stuff around my DESK.

Have you two bothered to use a software eject program? Things like CDEX and Windows' own CD player have an "Open Tray" button.

Maybe because we're only 4 weeks away from the next exciting non-stop season of 24.

Have you tried to find a firmware download for the player and flash it?

My NEC drive i've had for ~2 years now. it burns DL discs just fine and i've never had a problem with it.

NECs apparently have some of the best firmware around, allowing for region 0 drives (all region disks.) just check it out if you have issues.

It could also be Windows to blame. XP has always been screwy with optical drives. Back before SP2 patch the icons would get stuck even when you switched CD's, I think it still happens now even.

My DVD burner won't resume play if I pause the movie for longer than 1-2 minutes.
