Diaries forum

This idea actually came from a staff member, but I really like the idea so I'm posting it to see what other people think.

The idea was for the Diaries board to be members-only. Now, being familiar with the forum software, if this version is anything like any of the more recent versions, this is as simple as clicking "members-only" on the admin panel.
Not rocket science or anything.

Thoughts?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why is there a need for this? You need to be a member to post anything, anyway.

But if something like this is needed, I would suggest locking the forum for members that have at least 50 posts, or something like that.

the purpose behind it would be so that people can post somewhat personal things without "just anyone" being able to read it. I made a post, and I guess through google or something, some people I know found it. I really didn't want anyone I know to see it :|

Not to be an asshole but why post it in public if you don't want to you know to see it?

I wanted all the members HERE to see it.

I'm totally against just about anything on the internet being members-only, and the Diaries board is no exception. I'm not going to change the setting on that board, nor am I in support of a staffer who chooses to do so. If there are privacy issues at stake, I might be in favor of having the board cleaned out every X days like the other forums. That way, at least something you said a long time ago won't be dug back up by Google or other members.

Hm, yeah I suppose I see your point.

I believe that absolutely nothing personal should EVER be posted on the net if you aren't comfortable with people finding it, unless you are 150% positive it isn't going to be found.

Absolutely not. The diaries board is meant to REMAIN AS-IS forever.

Hiding it from non-members is up for discussion. NEVER will posts be deleted. EVER.

Then let me put in my two cents.

The diaries is a place where regular members can vent in a safe environment, a way to get something off their chest that they may not be able to do in other places of their life.

Hiding it would be a nice token of faith to the people that have been in this community for some time, and would like a semi-private place to just talk.

I vote yes on hiding it to non-registered users. It's a nice perk for people that have been kicking around ZMD for sometime, and a bonus to people new in the community.

Security? To prevent any possible flood attacks? By having to register, they at least have one way to prevent any attacks for a bit.

If people are really worried that someone will read the things they write in the diaries forum, I only have this to say:

GET A FUCKING LIVEJOURNAL AND MAKE ALL YOUR POSTS FRIENDS ONLY. OR PRIVATE.

Otherwise, deal or get out.

And what would prevent someone who knows you from finding this forum, realizing that you post here, register, and read the entries then?

As I said above, if you're worried about someone you know reading this, then get a livejournal and post there. Otherwise you're going to have to deal with the fact that this is totally public.

The argument seems reasonable for a board on which you're looking for expert opinions, but isn't the main purpose of the Diaries board to share the events of your life to a (mostly) sympathetic audience? I don't post on it very often, but if I did, I would probably be looking more for moral support than expert advice.

Could you be more specific about what you think is to be gained from anonymous viewers in this particular case?

I agree with lobster here. people you are related to seeing something they don't like isn't good. And People googling your name and finding some dirt to blackmail you with isn't good either.

1. I already have a blog.
2. Not everyone here is a member of LiveJournal, and THIS is the audience I was posting to.

So far, it seems like most of the people either agree, or are undecided. There have only been a couple who disagree with the idea.
