Presumably, it's glitchy because the game wasn't designed to have the player playing as Kintaro.

I still don't know hwy it should not work. Generally NPCs are usually tested by humans in prototypes, and then a usually crappy AI is replaced.

Most KoF have many NPCs, yet, with cheats you can use them quite fine (as long as your team consist of three times the same dude (ie, Krizalid in all team slots), being KoF2k1 the only exception I know of. Heck, even Onslaught and Apocalypse can be playable in XMvSF and MvC.

Which reminds me, Thanos is quite cool to play with.

Another example would be the Genesis version of Turtles Tournament Fighter.

I was able to play as the bosses, as well as Jade, Noob Saibot, and Smoke in MK2 for SNES with a PAR code I made, and you can start the fight with them, BUT...as soon as you try to do anything such as move, punch, kick, block, anything, the game crashes. This is probably because the controls are not mapped out in the ROM for these characters, so as soon as you try to do anything...WHIIIIIR WHIIIR *CRASH*. It may be possible to hack control tables into the ROM, perhaps by finding how data for the characters is stored, and moving it (overwriting) an existing character with the data for the new character, then hacking controls for their special moves, but this is an involved process, to say the least.

Wrong! I tried making P2 Noob Saibot and it let him move forward for a moment befor ZSNES crashed and sent an error report to Microsoft.

I think http://www.gscentral.com has some action replay codes where you modify the characters graphics, and another set of codes that let you modify the characters moves. So you could use a code to play as smoke and then give him scorpion moves.

I also made action replay codes for the genesis version of MK 2 there.

What a coincidence; there was already a thread on what I was doing for MK2. I think I'll take advantage of it... <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I began work on this exact project a few days ago, inspired by an unrelated post on GSCentral (Parasyte's thread on the emu board about finding previously unknown in-game cheats). I'm about halfway done; Smoke, Jade, and Noob Saibot now have movesets, complete with their one special move each (I mapped them to Back+HP, partially for laziness, mostly for convenience, partially because it was a cheap way to eliminate Jade's nonexistant air fan throw without my custom code job).

The only problems left are as follows:

- Smoke doesn't smoke. This isn't a priority, but seeing as how Jade retained her projectile invulnerability with no effort on my part, I'm curious as to what the cause is.
- Kintaro and Kahn playability. They have quite a few problems that need solving on the basic moves end, and then their specials will need their own activation code.
- Throwability of Shao Kahn and Kintaro. In a player's possession, these two behemoths can be thrown, but the game crashes if this happens. This needs to be eliminated.
- Normal selection. I'm thinking of putting simple codes into the character select screen to get each of the bosses (like hold R over Reptile for Noob, over Cage for Kintaro, etc.).
- 2P Vs. screen fix. This will probably boil down to "if character profile > 0Bh, replace photo with...." This is more of a challenging hack and a "wouldn't it be cool if..." for me than it is because I like the game, so custom photos = no.
- Ending fix. I don't care about this period, so it may not happen. If anything, it'll be the same as the Vs. screen fix.

I'm not guaranteeing I can do anything beyond Kahn and Kintaro being playable, but I'm willing to try. I have one terrific problem though...

I dunno what Kintaro and Shao Kahn are capable of. Beyond their fireballs (which I've gotten to work BTW), I dunno what they have in MK2.

If someone could fill me in on what *exactly* they could do (special moves, jump ability, duck ability, roundhouse ability, etc.), I'd appreciate it. My ignorance about what the two could do would only slow down any progress I make with them.

EDIT: I forgot how many problems Kahn and Kintaro had. They can't even turn around without freezing in place. I guess I'll go ahead and work on the character select screen next since that may not be as hard to track down and modify.

Welll, far as I can tell, Kintaro gots a punch, kick, throw, uppercut, fireball, teleport stomp, a normal jump, walk, taunt. I think that is it.

Kahn gots alot more tho. He has fireball, shoulder charge, Kick,

Actually, I remember alot less about Shao Kahn. You might have to have someone list his moves.

As for the bosses vs screens. Why not just draw a big question mark and have all the secret characters use it? And their ending you could just use a MKT boss ending. As in "Shao Kahn Wins" "Kintaro Wins". Just like that. No need to invent a story.

This is the first I heard of a MK hack being done. I wish you luck. I'll be first in line to play it I guarentee you.

1. Thanks for the info on Kintaro. I actually found out something else; if you rapid fire punches on Kintaro while he's blocking, he will automatically throw you, and sometimes taunt, by himself. This can be done on the player side already, all it takes are about 3 or 4 punches from the opponent. The only bad part about Kintaro is that he has a glitch where he sometimes just starts jumping forever and can't be stopped. Then he can't even take quite a few hits without freezing in place, like Kahn. From what I can gather, all of this may stem more from the character model than anything else since Smoke, Jade, and Noob don't have these problems.

If worse comes to worse and I can't fix Kintaro and Kahn's model problems, I'll find a way to make Smoke, Jade, and Noob selectable, cheaply fix the versus screen, and release a beta version until I figure out how to fix everything. For their limited move sets, Smoke and co. all have more attack power and walking speed than normal characters, so it's not like Smoke and Noob are *just* crippled Scorpions with visual perks. Jade gets that and her damnable projectile invulnerability, so I see no reason to defend her. Playing as the original Jade alone was worth the effort as far as I'm concerned.

2. For the vs. screen: that could depend on how the pictures work. If they're compressed, forget it. If they're editable with just a tile editor... I'll consider doing something. If you can't already tell, I only care for functionality; looks be damned, so long as it works.

3. It turns out Smoke's... smoke... is an actual move. He does not smoke until both players can move, and given that it's not automatic on the player side, that kinda gives it away. I'll have to figure out how that's done and put in a code for it (probably just Select, since it doesn't do anything anyway), or just map it to every directional button and let the game worry about it.

Well, if the game will run without glitching it would be good to map the smoke to when he is walking. Pressing Select to smoke would be combersome and kinda unatural. I guess I don't care so much about the looks either. Hey perhaps you can make it skip the vs screen when you select a hidden character. Thats what happens in MK3 if you select a boss.
