View Full Version : Totally New... Hope I'm not getting a Late start

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone here might be able to point me in the right direction. I'm 15, my uncle game me his old SNES and I was playing through some games and came across Secret of Mana. I LOVE IT. My uncle loves it.

So then I got interested in looking up SNES Roms and Emulators and noticed a lot of people making changes to games. I'm totally new to all this and I hope I'm not getting a late start at all this, but I would like to start learning how to modify games (especially secret of mana and modifying the world map, enemies, characters, towns, etc...) I've been searching around google, but have not come across anything that is very helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.romhacking.com should have what you need to get you started in learning to romhack.

It's never too late to get started in something that you're interested in. :> As already mentioned, www.romhacking.com is probably your best bet for finding information, but there's a lot of other sites out there as well. Try searching on Google and see what you come up with, and ask questions here whenever you get stuck.

What I want to do is expand the world (game map). Create new areas, and change the way some of them look. I may want to edit some enemie stats (making them a little harder, more hp, etc..)

By the way, this game was way totally awesome. I mean it may have simple graphics, but I love the whole system of the game.

So i'm at romhacking.com (thanks for the links) and I see I'm gonna have a lot of learning to do (A LOTTTTTTTT).

Slow down there turbo... start small.

Start with the easy stuff like text/graphics. Move up to finding tidbits of data (like enemy stats) and editing those. Eventually you might get into level editing (although with a game like SoM, that might be tough)

Well, age doesnt matter.
First you should read all the documents in Tech section.
They will help you a lot.<img src=smilies/2gunsfiring_v1.gif>
Oh, and there is no need to go to Rom Hacking site.
Zophar Domain has everything you will ever need.
This site is the best!

It's not much, but here is what I have found on the game so far (by way of random corruption)

105116 - 8 Byte Enemy Movement and AI data (Each ending with FF)
101DFA -1021D9 - Enemy Stats (Each preceeded by 6 bytes (00) ) (first one Rabite)
Byte 1: Level
Byte 2 & 3: HP
Byte 4 & 5: MP
Byte 6: Attack Power
Byte 7:
Byte 8:
Byte 9: Defense or Evade

I wouldn't mind playing a really good Hard Type hack of Secret of Mana.
