I've been using JNES for a long time now. I wanted to do something with a Famicom game which JNES doesn't support, so I got FCE Ultra, and it seemed pretty good. Though it lags and skips sometimes...

NES Topia was okay too. I like it because you can silence the sound channels.

The reason I'm not using really JNES is because with Service Pack 2, it brings up some retarded error message everytime I close it. It works, but closing it brings up the message.

So, what emulator is your fave for NES?

I use FCEUltra because my computer is slow as shit
but if I had a better computer, I'd go with nintendulator(sp?)

I still use NNNesterJ because it's got a shitload of features I can't live without, but I should probably switch over to NEStopia since it has most of the features plus movie support that doesn't blow. Not to mention NEStopia is an overall more accurate emu. It doesn't handle frameskipping quite right though. Like when I put on some graphics filters, emulation slows down for my comp, instead of the usual frame skipping so the comp can keep up. Plus I don't think NEStopia sleeps at all, it constantly uses all of my CPU when running (which would probably make it a poor candidate for multitasking... like if you have Winamp running in the background).

I haven't really tried the newer FCEU builds, but they're probably good. If only FCEU had the features and UI of the other emus.

Nessie was suprisingly good as well, but it has the same sleep problem. It's been a while since I used it, so I can't really remember anything else about it.

Nintendulator is probably the most accurate, but isn't exactly great for casual playing.

Anyway... my top 4 picks (in no particular order) are:

NNNesterJ - The oldest of the bunch, so the emulation is often times inaccurate. But the feature list is huge and the UI is fantastic. My main beef is lack of movie support (it has it, but it's really shitty and gets out of sync after 2 seconds).

NEStopia - Rivals (or even surpasses) NNNJ in features, plus it's emulation is more accurate... but it has little problems here and there (like the above mentioned frameskip thing).

FCE Ultra - Only real beef is the UI. Could have a little more features, but really, the emu is very very good.

Nessie - Another modern one. I can't really comment on it because I haven't used it in a long time... but I remember it being suprisingly good.

I never understood the appeal to JNes or NESten. Those emus just seem so 'blah' to me.

I was working on my own emu a (so I could have an emu that had all the features I want with the UI I want), but I don't know if I'll ever finish it. /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

FCEUltra. I don't emulate much, but that's what I have right now.

Some friends of mine had a disc they were using on their Dreamcast to play a ton of NES (not SNES) games. Can anyone point me in the direction of something like that? I'm having a hard time finding any info.

Thanks.

If you go to the DCemulation main site, there's others listen as well. If NesterDC doesn't work for a specific game you try, try a different one. It may support a mapper NesterDC doesn't.

There's three of them that work pretty well, but Nester DC is teh best. It's the one I use.<img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>

I like FCEUltra mainly because of the filters and shitload of features. It emulates very faithfully, albeit slowly at times.

I used to be a fan of nesticle long time ago because I like the weird sound. One Day I downloaded FCE ultra...
It replaced NESticle, not only that but it replaced ROCKnesX(when it works)
