You don't. It's similar to trying to fit two gallons of milk into a one-gallon jug.

If you want to convert 16 bit to 8 bit you can open in like paint or something and save it a 8 bit(256 total will be used). To put in a game after I don't know.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Only if your being an snobbish technophile. Pipesclangor is obviously talking about converting 16 bit picture images into an 8 bit imaget. Go to paint and save the 16 bit bmp file as 8 bit. Simple.

Now, putting it in a game is a different story. I am sure that there may be some bitmaps like images in certain 8 bit games. So i guess, replacing that data with a different file would be possible. How you would do that is a different story. I have no clue

I did alot of assuming. From the title I am thinking he has some kind of 16 bit image. My guess a bitmap. Then convert it to 8 bit and use some kind of utility to put it into a game? I don't know. But now I think about it it 8 bit is a bit much in a NES game. Should it be turned into 4 bit? More that I don't know.

just throw the thing into http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~kenth/tm/Tile Molester</a>. it'll automatically convert it from whatever previous format into an 8-bit NES formated image. done and done.

Well It's just a demo test of what you could do with a nes game, but the best results always come from self modding down to four colours then reinserting them. You do need to remeber that 1 all tiles are 16x16 and the bg sprites have 4 colours while character sprites have only 3, because fourth is for transparentcy. You also have to factor in Nes limitation though like only four palates per sprite type.

P.S. That's made useing a screen from SMB3, and converted graffics from SMAS:SMB3, SMW, and Actraiser. Although the animation would take alot longer it all could be done.

NES graphics are not 8-bit. 8-bit graphics imply a depth of 256 colors. The NES only has 64 available colors (many of which are repeats), and each 8x8 tile can only use 4 colors... so NES graphics are closer to 2-bit than 8-bit /wwwthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Gil-Galad

Yeah and to make matters worse is that you can only have more then 4 colors onscreen at once by the use of attribute tables.

Last I checked, this was an emulation site. Which is generally used to run "obsolete games", as you call them. Nevermind the fact a lot of colleges are teaching NES assembly now.

Touche

Now please note, the game system is obselete. No new games are being programmed for it. The purpose of emulation, IMHO, is to conserve the games of these obselete systems for now and the future. Infact, I believe alot of the games from the older simpler systems are better than the games now.

Now, the joke - or what is funny - is all the animosity displayed in this tread on rom hacking over asking how to fit a 16 bit image in an 8 bit game system. The bitching and gripes are pathetic.

As far as NES assembly being taught in schools now, I am not sure, but I suspect your refering to the assembly language found in Motorolla microcontrollers. This assembly is in use and would be the same or very similar to the Motorolla 6508 Assembly code.

Hell, in school, I learned 8086 assembly and had to play around with an 8088 microcontroller.

Yah I did the full level http://www.elazulspad.net/ubbthreads/attachments/2385-SMB3Test.gifhere</a> just to see what it would look like like. It'd work for any SMB3 Sky level not just 1-4. But sadly I don't have half the skills necicary to arange anything, so If I hacked anything into the game it'd be left to what's there and and what could be moved around in a editor. Which is much trickier to get something to look good. Accually my unfinished Roland's Curse hack had that problem It would have looked beter if I could have moved sprites around so I could have a 16x32 tree square insted to the crap 16x16 ones.
