View Full Version : People edit, but how do you ADD?

My friend thought of a funny idea that I should add a new secret character to FF3 by adding Jesus!
I make a whole new town just for Jesus to live in, and you fight him (I already made a Jesus sprite, I just redid the Final Kefka and put in long hair and a beard, as for the character sprite I redid Setzer since he has long hair already) and when you win he joins.
Is it possible to add a town, and character? I keep searching for guides but it only talks about editing. I have 2 of the best FF3 editing programs but they can only edit, I don't think they add anything..
So is it possible to add more to the game? I'm not experienced with hex editor but I can always learn. As long as I know if addiing a sidestory to FF3 is possible otherwise it's not worth making some enemy to add in the dino-forest like what everyone else does usually.

HAHAHAHAHA.

Dude, you should just re-do the entire game so it's like some really fucked up, evil version of Final Fantasy 6. You could call it Final Fantasy 666. You could have a scene where Locke and Sabin throw a Molotov cock-tail over the gates of heaven:

LOCKE: Alright, light it!
SABIN: Okay, it's lit!
LOCKE: Throw it already, you want it to blow up in your hand?!
SABIN: Okay, okay, shit!
*KABOOOOOOOOOOM*
LOCKE: Whew! Okay, let's get the fuck out of here before God sees us!
SABIN: Pussy!

As for your question, yeah, you could add stuff if there's room where the data for the maps, lay-outs, monsters, etc. is stored, but the editor doesn't support that, and I doubt there is room...You could do some serious hacking, expand the ROM to 32Mbit, and move all the data to the extra space, and change all the pointers so it points to it and add new ones for the new shit, but that's like, hard. I mean, really hard.

It has like 600kb left I think. That should be enough right? I'm only adding very little..
Here's a picture of the Jesus sprite when you fight him:

I think JadussD is correct. You'd more than likely have to expand the rom to 32 bit and do a buncha pointer changing...it'd take a while.
P.S. Don't let the Danoz guy see you doing this.
Just kidding. Keep me posted.

You have to do this. Spoof hacks are usually frowned upon but that sounds too funny to not see done.

Yes, mocking the founder of a belief system that many people base their life on, great concept there. Please at least try and keep the humor at a somewhat intelligent level.

Hehehe...this is gonna open up a whole can of worms with some of the people here.

It's still a funny idea, though. Good luck with it.

Anyway, seems people are all for the idea... so how do I expand it to 32 bit since that's what I have to do it seems....There's still space left, are you sure I have to?

If it is indeed possible to add a side story, how do I do so?

What about if he hacked in Mohammed and Buddha just to keep things even then? Personally I would love to see that. Better yet, do a complete overhaul with your party consiting of religious icons.

Bah, Jesus would just see it as a form of praise and you know it

Seriously, if I was worshipped by millions of people and someone hacked me into FF3 US I'd know I'd be honored

Meh. My point is that it would offend people no matter how it is handled. Of course all religions are open to criticism, it just seems better, to me at least, if it is done in an intelligent manner and doesn't resort to nothing but childish jokes.

But you could leave the game completely unhacked and some people would be offended. I, for one, am offended when people claim that FF6 has a good story. And don't give me that "Well, it's good in comparison." spiel either. Just because a monkey turd is better than a steaming pile of elephant dung doesn't mean I want to step in it. Hell, it's only good "for the time" if you ignore PC games of that day and age.

I think what I'm trying to say is that I don't like Jesus.

I was a bit disapointed in the game too. It started out very promising and then when the world changed, the games story was lost i felt.

I didn't make it that far. I forget just how far I was. I know I got past some raft ride and I got past the part where the castle turned into a tank or something (forget which of those happened first, which is why I listed both) but I didn't make it to the second world or whatever.

I intend to sit down and play it again sometime. I recently started playing Chrono Trigger again and while I still found the game really boring, I did enjoy the prison level and I have to admit that the atmosphere created by the graphics, music and level design is top notch.

Give RPGOne's retranslation a try, it's a little better in the story aspect (Though not much, really, FF6's story was not very good in the second world and it shows in both translations)

My fault. I was hoping people would get the point, but I did think "what about people who might be thinking of that disease?" and then I thought "eh screw it" so I left it in caps.

Well, it is rather difficult to explain how to recode a game in a messageboard thread. Do you even know 65816 Assembly? If not, start by learning that, then move on to actually implementing new features in a game.

Okay, so editing is easier, but it appears that in the FF3 Editor program, you can alter the world map. Can I put in a town on the world map and when you walk into it, it gets you into, say, Narshe, and I can just edit the whole Narshe map, making it so it can be whatever I want it to be?

...alright.

Am I seriously the only person in this thread who looked at the original post and immediately thought...

"Great, this guy created a modified sprite using a simple FF3 GUI editor program, and now he thinks he can conquer the world"? He said he's not even experienced with a hex editor.

I haven't played with the FF3 editor, but I have a feeling that you're in way over your head. There's no way you're going to be able to create a completely new location using a GUI editor unless... well, unless these programs are more robust than I thought. We're talking about creating entirely new routines here for locations and characters and who knows what else.

Why not just have a go at it with RPGMaker or something? Create a completely new game based on FF6 without having to worry about expanding a ROM or anything like that.

Good luck, but don't expect hand-holding from these guys unless you're an astonishingly quick learner... which I doubt you are. You just want a quick answer to something that isn't really quick at all... :\

It takes time. Do not be so impatient. My first (what I considered a successful hack) took four months. Become one with the hex.
It is your friend.
Event changing is a pain in the ass. You need to know the whole game back to front. I'm not saying it's impossible, just a major pain.
I've never hacked an SNES games, therefore I can't elaborate on adding data. I'm sure it's quite similar to NES and Gameboy, however where pointers need to be checked, and possibly moved.

Which is why I was asking if the editor was capable of doing what I wanted. I was actually planning on asking if someone was planning on making a GUI editor that's just like RPG maker but I though: Nah, too hard. You're right, I don't even know what a pointer is, I shall cut off my penis and commit harakiri for bothering you.

I think the world would truely shut up if someone out there made the ultimate GUI editor that does everything for you. If any of you made one, you would be a famous hero in the rom hacking community. Just think about the children!

Dude, that set the tone for nearly EVERY Squaresoft RPG after FF6 though. I mean think about it, they ALL die half-way through.

Final Fantasy VII - dies when Aerith dies
Xenogears - dies when disc 1 ends
Chrono Cross - dies when Serge becomes Lynx
Dewprism - dies after you can start walking around

Pssh, don't listen to them. I wouldn't personally make or play the hack, but I'm not going to criticise somebody for doing it. It's not like the idea is original or funny... people just like the offensiveness of it. Sounds like a hard project though, good luck with all the hacking involved.
