Any programs out there that allow for the conversion of SNES music (.SPC), Genesis music (.GYM), or GBA music to MP3s?

Sure. Get Winamp and an SPC or GYM plugin, then get the Disk Writer Output plugin.

haw! I'm doing that right now. OK, here's what you do

Step 1. download winamp (If you don't have it already... which is doubtful)

Step 2. find a game music plugin for the certain game music format to want to convert to MP3 (I know there's an SPC one, but I'm not too sure about GYM and there isn't a sound format for GBA, yet. You will have to log to WAV in VisualBoyAdvance(correct me if I'm wrong on that one))

step 3. find the LAME output plugin on winamps' website (not too hard, just do a search for "LAME") and download/install it

step 4. Open up winamp and press CTRL + P to bring up your preferences. From there, go to output and select LAme output plugin and click configure... then set your encoding preferences)

step 5. Make a playlist of the songs you want to encode and press play

there, you're done<img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

Nope, no GBA Sound Format yet. I expect when that does happen (it's kind of inevitable if you think about it), it'll be either a PSF style or NSF style format.

And the current GYM format sucks ass. Hopefully we'll get a replacer for it as a psf style format.

That'd be sweet. GYMs as they are now are freaking huge compared to all the other console music formats out there (that I can think of).

And they are inaccurate.

How do you figure? Granted... I don't really know that much about the GYM format... but I was under the impression that GYMs were just logs of which apu registers are written to and when. The only way I could see that being inaccurate is if the emulator used to log the GYM logged it poorly. I find it much more likely that it's the GYM players which are inaccurate and not the gym files themselves.

But like I said, I know little about the gym format... so you could very well be right. Perhaps you could explain why gym files are inaccurate and sort of clear up my understanding of gyms.

I'm all for ripped formats though. Logged formats are too clunky and lack looping.

I would even love a ripped SNES format to replace SPC dumps. SPCs are rather inflated when you consider that a single song is 64k. I mean the entire FF3us soundtrack is ~4.72 MB and the entire FF7 psf soundtrack is ~821 K. Not to mention not all games are compatible with a dumpable format (Kirby's Superstar)... and some games just don't seem to work as SPCs (DQ1+2 remix). And dumps often have starting time issues. But I doubt that'll ever happen due to SPC's popularity.

So yeah... rips all the way.

Yeah, I suppose you are right about players being inaccurate instead of the actual dump. However, to me, as a mere listener, it makes no difference which way is it.

It sounds inaccurate, and I would assume that the reason for this has something to do with the dumps. Maybe they are hard to emulate or maybe no-one gives a damn about GYM format.

Whatever the case, GYM needs, and hopefully will get, a replacer.

I have a Kirby Superstar SPC set right here though.... <img src=smilies/erm.gif>

Straight from SNESamp's music archive. (btw, it's just a rar with a different extension).

Bah, once its on your hard drive if the uncompressed SPCs bother you get a player that supports rsn. All I care about is the time it takes to download, and with solid RAR it is very nice indeed.

Although, I'd really like nsf/psf style genesis music format.

lol When in doubt, check the SNESamp website for the 'pure music enjoyment'.

Although, you are right in that some games can't be dumped. The only one I know for a fact is the SNES Lord of the Rings game, although the way people talk about that game you'd think the music was composed by God Himself.

*rolls his eyes at that site* Sheesh, you'd think that it was Zophar's Domain's fault that people were to lazy to go through and properly tag all of their SPC sets. lol I've been thinking of going back and timing-tagging a few of them myself. In fact, I'm almost done with the Tenchi Muyo! Animated Story SPC set, with timing, actual ID666 tags (extended info even), a couple re-dumped SPCs because the beginning of the original work done was clipped a bit, and one additional SPC.
