Hario - A hack of Super Mario Brothers 2 - by SpoonyBard
--------------------------------------------------------

V 4.46

1 - Levels Updates

May 2, 2000

Ok, first of all I finished 4-1 (mostly). Due to a minor bug I can't yet figure out, one of the
areas I wanted to add can't be added yet. You'll see a locked door in 4-1, but there's no key.
Also, I finally completed Toad's and The Princess' new graphics. I also changed the character
properties. I updated a few graphics, changed some palattes, and also changed some of the
instruments.

April 23, 2000

World 3 is completed, mostly. I was unable to change the 'way to the boss room' in 3-3 due to a
bug that doesn't allow that area to be altered, since it totally messes it up whenever it saves
there. Not many new graphic changes since world 3 uses world 1's object set. I did redo a few
graphics however.

March 29, 2000

I have world 2 completed now. Also the boss room in 1-2 and the way to the boss room in 1-3 which
I couldn't change before are now altered. All together there are 2 worlds and 28 areas changed
now. Time for world 3 :D

March 21, 2000

The first update for Hario. Well, technically it's the second, if there's anyone who's played
the original graphics only hack. But this is the first release with new levels. And I have the
first world edited. 1-1, 1-2 and 1-3. The V 1.12 means the first release and 12 areas edited.
There are 16 total areas in world 1. But there are 4 areas that are either unchanged or
unaccesable due to a few reasons:

1-1, The area with the ninji, waterfall and beanstalk, second cave room. While trying to change
that place I messed it up unbelievably, and it crashes every single time you enter that area. I
tried for a few hours trying to restore it with no luck. So I just removed the dark door that
leads into that area, and in the first cave area I removed the beanstalk that leads down into it.

1-2, The two jars. I just removed them since they had no real purpose in my version of 1-2.

1-3, The corridor right before Mousers room. For some strange reason whenever I change ANYTHING
in that room the game crashes whenever you enter the area. I don't know why it does that, but
until it's either fixed or I find a way to work around it, the small corridor right before
Mousers room is unchanged. Don't worry, I made up for it with a NICE boss room (heh heh)

3 - Explanation

A lot of my hack won't make much sense to everyone. I started it a few years ago as a graphics
only hack as a joke. It is based on one of my teachers in high school who's real name I won't
mention, but he used to have an old nick-name called Harry-O. And Harry-O sounds just like
Hario. The emphasis on turnips originated with a joke me and a friend of mine we having with him
about turnips. Don't ask how it got started, it just did ok? :D So all the mushroom related
stuff in Mario2 was changed to Turnips. The Cherry Graphics were changed to red lolipops, he had
a strict no candy rule in his class whereas other teachers didn't. The POW Block was changed to a
-100 block. One of his tradmarks in correcting tests and assignments was to put a little red -100
next to a really stupid mistake. IE mispelling a common word, or one he's gone over several
times. Basically it meant that if he could, he would take away full marks for that one stupid
mistake. And of course there is the hacked Mario graphic, which I made out to look like him.
Those are the only graphics changes that really mean anything, the rest I just threw in.

4 - The Characters

Hario - Teacher who's on a quest to get his test papers back. He has medium scores on all
abilities, and is a good choice for most levels.

Pail - A good friend of Hario's, and also a physics teacher. While normally having average
ability scores, he has found a way to alter the laws of physics and actually has HIGHER running
and jumping abilities when carrying something.

Cody - One of Hario's students who's helping him get the test's back. Due to his shortness, he
can't run too fast, or jump very high, however because of his strength he isn't affected when
carrying something.

Mindi - Another of Hario's students. While not being the smartest person in the world, she is
certianly nimble. She is incredibly quick and can jump well, however if she is carrying something
she is hindered greatly. (Not a good choice for levels where you have to carry a key around for
a long time).

5 - The levels

1-1 : Quite a few changes, you'd need to stay on your toes, it's no cakewalk like the original.

1-2 : Arrgh! No Pidget! Well it's ok, theres a bridge over the gap, but watch out for the grey
Beezo swarm!

1-3 : Just be careful. Take your time, but don't stay in one place too long in the first area of
this level. And I suggest you use the Princess, her floating could save you at Mouser.

2-1 : Welcome to nightmare land! :D (Ok Ok, I could have come up with a better name. The graphics
have been altered so it's all scary-like) There are some tricky jumps and if you miss you'll find
yourself in quicksand pit with no escape.

2-2 : I kinda overdid it with the quicksand a bit ;D just keep jumping and you should't have TOO
much trouble. Be careful of the places where you have to sink down in the quicksand to make it
under a platform.

2-3 : Nighttime in the desert, lovely. It's kinda hard to see what you're doing for the first
part of this level. Toad wouldn't be a good idea here, there are some tricky jumps again. Luigi
wouldn't be a good idea either since his jumps are too sloppy. Be careful in the room before the
boss room, one wrong move and you'll fall right onto a pit of spikes.

3-1 : Waterfall ho! The first part isn't changed much, but the climb up the waterfall isn't as
easy as it once was. The power-up mushrooms are in different locations as well, and no shortcut
to the boss either.

3-2 : One note on 3-2, the lower area takes several seconds to load for some reason, I don't
know why, but don't worry, it's not crashing, just be patient :D The door to the boss is locked
and the key is on the other side of the level! Good luck backtracking.

3-3 : Phew, this level was a real pain, but I worked harder on this one than any other thus far.
Welcome to Mousers castle, and he really has it in for you. The second mushroom is hidden pretty
well, see if you can find the shortcut.

4-1 : All and all, it's a pretty simple world, though not easy. The level is not totally finished,
all add the other area when I figure out the bug. It's still beatable, you just can't go through
the locked door, since there's no key.

6 - Credits and Comments

First I would like to thank the following

Acmlm - Heck, he's the one who made the SMB2 Discombobulator, and without it, this would just be
a graphics only hack. But thanks to him I was able to make the levels that gave you so much
frustration.

X-4000 - The founder of Challenge Games and an inspiration to people wanting to make level hacks.
And he was an inspiration to me, and he gave me some good advice for hacking levels.

If you play this hack, please e-mail me with comments. I want as much feedback as possible. This
is the first time I've tried level editing and I want to know how well (or terrible) I did.
