REQUIREMENTS
To use this patch, you need the following things:
- An English Final Fantasy ROM
- SnesTool (for applying the patch - instructions are below)
- Nesticle or another NES emulator
All of these (except the ROM) can be found on PR Translations. I will not upload the ROM in case my site is deleted again.
USING THE PATCH
Posting the patched ROM on my site is not possible because my site was deleted recently, and the fact that I had the ROM on my site may have been the reason. Because of this, it is easier to post a patch. Here are some instructions for applying the patch:
- Put the patch (which should be in the same zip file as this Readme), the ROM and SnesTool in the same folder.
- Run SnesTool.
- Press the U button on your keyboard.
- It will ask you to select the Unchanged File (this means the Final Fantasy ROM). Use the arrow keys to select the ROM, then press Return again.
- It will ask you to select the patch. Use the arrow keys to select the patch (which is called SMQUEST.IPS), then press Return.
- Press Esc to exit SnesTool.
- It should have patched the ROM properly. The patched ROM can now be run in an emulator like any other ROM.
WHAT'S CHANGED
The idea of this hack is to integrate the Super Mario Bros. characters into the Final Fantasy world. Along the way I am also improving the graphics a bit.
Latest Updates
- I've added in Mario and Luigi's battle graphics (although they are from the original Mario Bros game, so they don't look very good)
- I've added in Toad's field graphics
- I have improved the font a bit, by changing the weapon tiles and sorting out the squashed tiles which I messed up in the last version
- I've changed the name entry screen, since it's a bit pointless having all the letters twice now that there is no lower-case font
- I've changed the copyright date to 2000 (although it's not exactly an important part of the hack, lol)
Graphics
- The font has been changed to the SMB3 font (does anyone else really hate the original FF1 font?)
- The border around the text boxes has been changed (there are now mushrooms at each corner)
- Mario, Luigi and Toad's field graphics
- I have changed some of the town graphics (for instance the trees are now mushrooms!)
- I have changed the potion graphic to a mushroom
- The colours of the battle graphics of the characters have been changed, ready for me to change the graphics to the Super Mario Bros. characters
- Mario and Luigi's battle graphics (although they are from the original Mario Bros game, so they don't look very good)
Text
- The character names have been changed:
Fighter/Knight = Mario/Super Mario
Thief/Ninja = Luigi/Super Luigi
Black Belt/Master = Baby Yoshi/Yoshi
Red Mage/Red Wizard = Peach/Toadstool Queen
White Mage/White Wizard = Toad/Mushroom
Black Mage/Black Wizard = Kamek/Magikoopa
- The introduction text is different
- Two of the town names have been changed (the names I have used are the Japanese names of two of the enemies, but I will probably change these again when I get round to changing the dialogue)
- I've changed the name entry screen, since it's a bit pointless having all the letters twice now that there is no lower-case font

Questions NOT to ask me (and their answers):
- How do I hack and translate ROMs?
Go to http://fly.to/vale (I'm afraid can't help you more than that, I don't have time)
- When will you finish this hack?
I'm working on it over a long period of time, but I will hopefully finish it eventually
- When is the next patch coming out?
When I've finished it
- Can I have the next patch now?
No, because I haven't finished it yet (otherwise I would have released it on my site like I always do)
- Can you make a hack of [insert game name here] for me?
I don't have much time right now, but if you want a hack to be made, make it yourself (you will get a lot more fun and some hacking experience out of it)! This means you, Jigglypuff!!!
I'm getting a bit tired of being asked the same questions over and over again, so I thought I'd add that little FAQ thing in. It probably won't be very helpful to anyone (apart from the ROM hacking question), but they're the same answers I'd give you anyway. If you have more specific questions about those things feel free to ask me, but apart from that please don't bother.
Thanks to the people who made Thingy, Relative Search, Tile Layer, SnesTool and Tabular! Without them this wouldn't be possible at all!
